New nanos can record audio via accessories

Ok, we know we're beating the iPod nano drum quite a bit here, but there's just so much great new stuff about them. This latest find is, again, hailing from our pals at iLounge in the form of a surprise feature Mr. Jobs must have forgotten to add to Tuesday's notecards: 2G nanos can record audio via available accessories. Thanks to a firmware update, iLounge has so far tested recording audio on the new nanos with Belkin's TuneTalk Stereo and XtremeMac's MicroMemo, both working flawlessly. Exactly how much recording the nanos can hold, and how long they can record, is still up in the air though. Nanos, as we know, don't have a power-chugging hard drive, so that should certainly aid their recording stamina. However, the fact that they top out at 8GB and the accessories only record in a hefty WAV file format make things complicated.

I'd test some recording myself, as I just picked up my own 2G nano (review pending), but I'm not sure if my nano could stand the sound of my voice for hours at a time. That, and I don't actually own any of the recording accessories to begin with.

If anyone tries this out, feel free to post your experiences in the comments. Otherwise, we'll be sure to keep you posted when iLounge reports from their super-secret underground labs.

i just tried recording with my belkin tunetalk on my new ipod 8gig nano (it arrived today)--it works great! one thing that is cool is when you save your audio file, it does it instantly--no hard drive delay!:)

Also I hope that accessory manufacturers will create a scaled down version that more appropriately fits the form factor of the nano.

Sweet!
I was in limbo because the 2 major features I wanted in a new iPod were compatibility with the Nike Sport kit and recording capabilities.

Since the full size iPod isn't going to be compatible with Nike kit, it looks like i'll be getting a new nano.

I also want to be able to use the iPod as a PDA and be able to make quick voice reminders to myself. The ideal solution would be an iPhone but I can't wait another 6 months.

Marco - 2G means second generation, not 2GB (the size). It just means the latest iteration of iPods.

My FM receiver for the older Nano, (from last year!!) will not work on the new Nano 8GB I bought on Tuesday because the headphone plug on the new model is not in the same position as the older one. I have to fork out another $60 for the new Nano FM receiver....AAARRRRHHHHH.

The Recorders available right now showcased on iLounge look bulky and ugly. I hope these companies come up with a smaller less intrusive model, but otherwise having recording capabilities is long overdue on the Nano :)

one question: you are mentioning only the 2GB-models - the 4 and 8 GB models are not able to do that? or are not yet tested? there should be the same technical stuff inside, shouldn't it? cheers,
marco

This is wonderful news. I had put off getting a Nano as a sort of PDA device precisely because I couldn't make quick annotations. This cinches it for me. Although I think I'm gonna go with a nuclear green model.
