Xtorrent Beta 1

You kids and your bittorrents. Why, I remember when I was in college and Napster was all the rage (this was when Napster was new, and still cool). We had one source for our downloads and we liked it.

Now everyone is bittorrenting files to and fro (only open source software and the like, I am sure), and now there is a new OS X bittorent client called Xtorrent. This is from Dave Watanabe, the creator of NewsFire, so you know it is going to be pretty. Xtorrent has a bunch of neat features, and is now available as a beta. Check it out, bugs and all (I mean, it is a beta).

If a shiny UI is not something you are willing to pay for, then this is not the application for you.

how does this compare to Tomato? I've been using that with no problems.

There are very few programs that are better on Windows than on OS X, and uTorrent is one of them. Small footprint with excellent features.

I can't imagine someone charging for a torrent client as it will surely be cracked and available on torrent sites.

Does anyone else get slower DLs using 6881-6889 ports than when choose something unique (eg: port 35673)? I think my ISP has configured access lists on its border routers to give certain ports priority over others. I can't verify this but it's the only explanation I can think of.

$20 is the price for shiny stuff and it's an honest price for a shining work.

If only he knew how, Watanabe would build a proprietary version of the internet, add some shiny buttons and ask 20 dollars for it.

I'm not even going to look at this app. Transmission is free and works just fine.

Does Dave Watanabe have anything to do with Acquisition?

Aside from being the program's author, nothing at all.

It looks like the love child of Transmission and Acquisition. The UI is VERY similar to Acquisition. Does Dave Watanabe have anything to do with Acquisition?

I said it in response to another post about this thief, and I'll say it again. No talent hack, who's sole "talent" seems to be taking Open Source P2P code, making a GUI for it, selling it, then acting all high and mighty when someone either pirates it or calls him on his theft.

@ Will,

Maybe you've not noticed, but they all look like clones of the particular version of iTunes that was around at the time of release. Every little UI change Apple introduce - be it good or bad - this guy jumps all over like a little puppy dog. It's kinda sad.

@ Mason Galindo,

That's horribly slow for such a well-seeded file. Your ISP probably bandwidth-throttles bittorrent traffic. Try a client like Azureus, which has optional encryption - so your ISP can't slow down the packets because it doesn't know what they are.

hi - i also tried xtorrent and I killed it 5 times durint 10 minutes of usage ;)
only with searching some stuff.

its a great program or would get ;) but the information says that it is beta of a shareware - that gives this software a BIG minus. I wont buy torrent downloading software. Why should I?
