Omni Group confirms OmniFocus, a GTD app in the works

The Omni Group has hinted at new products and teased us with a handy tool and toy. While 3rd party solutions have existed to turn their OmniOutliner Pro into a mean, lean Getting Things Done machine, the Omni Group has finally spilled the quintessential bean in a recent blog post and confirmed that a true-blue GTD app is in the works, and its name is OmniFocus.

However, I say the Omni gang spilled one bean - and one bean only - because they have twisted the cruel rumor knife ever so slightly by withholding any other details. No features, no clues, no ETA or price range. Not even a blurry icon. Cursed Omni Group! For now, it seems, you have forced us to suffer in your dungeon of anticipation! Our only salvation is your humbling generosity - some day - offering the warm sunlight of more details. Oh despair - thy name is OmniFocus!

It's now been confirmed that this is going to be a development of kinkless. Here's a link to the post from the developer of kGTD, describing his contributions to the upcoming OmniFocus.

Yes, this is news. Many of us are currently using Kinkless+OmniOutliner Pro, and would welcome an "official" and polished solution. The Kinkless solution is good, but not perfect.

#1: If this works as well as hoped, it'll be as much of a pro or semi pro app as you can get. With the functionality and productivity gains, this would be worth $300 in the Windows world. Just because it's going to be sanely prices, doesn't mean it won't be invaluable.

#8: Because Kinkless+OOPro isn't perfect. It's an AppleScript bolt-on solution that does a good job (I use it, as do many others), but it has limitations. (Manual syncing, anyone?) So, for GTD, this app will likely be *better* than OOPro.

Guys, guys, c'mon: what you're all forgetting is that if *some* readers are exceedingly offended by a piece of information *they* don't care about, it *obviously* means it can't be news anymore.

Totally sorry everyone; I'll check with y'all's agenda before printing anything again.

This is particularly interesting for those of us--and I know I'm not the only one--who like OOP but can't seem to get Kinkless (which is almost completely undocumented--to work properly. In the meantime, as noted above, there are lots of other GTD apps in the works, including Thinking Rock and one which hasn't been released yet called KaDo List.

This is new to me. I have spent the last three days trying out Customer Management productivity apps (Daylite, Crm4Mac, Studiometry, Redlien, Quiokbooks CM, SOHO Organizer) and reading about 20 others. This GTD sounds like a good concept. I'm willing to give it a try even if it may be the latest flavor of the month.

Between this, Inbox, and the third GTD-oriented app announced in the My Dream App contest... why are all of them coming out NOW, and not a couple years ago?

90% of innovation is secretly people ripping each other off.

Though OmniOutliner + Kinkless works so well, why would I want to spend an extra $20-$40 to get an app that does't have the versatility of OmniOutliner Pro?

I also second the comment that this is barely news.

Man whats with the omni haters among us?

Any news out of Omni is great news. If done correctly, this app will be extremely important.
