Messenger for Mac sign-in problems

Looks like Microsoft's recent upgrading of Messenger for Mac to version 6 didn't go down as smoothly as they would have liked. Microsoft's own Messenger newsgroup is just one of the places buzzing with people having problems logging in.

I found this out while struggling through this jungle of versions myself. Going from 5.1.1 to 6.0.0 locked me out of the service, with only a typically vague error message to guide me. To make matters worse, I was able to log in to the fancy new Windows Live Messenger on PC. Trashing my preferences and going back to previous versions did nothing, and Google wasn't much more helpful. That was around the time I stumbled on to the newsgroup.

In the end, my solution was simple enough - I changed my admittedly weak Passport password to something a little more robust and, voila, I was in.

Are any of you having similar problems? Let me know in the comments if so and what workarounds you've found.

- I am having probs with messenger 6.1. Using G5 OS 10.4.8. Was forced to upgrade and its never worked. It goes to sign in but comes up with the message:
"failure because service not available". I use a combination of ichat and skype to talk to collegues and for business reasons, the fat comb over bosses of the world that are on PC's, I communicate through Messenger. I have tried everything from the suggested deleting of the various prefs and strengthening my password and all the other stuff, but nothing so far works. I can log in to the msn web page but not messenger. Any other suggestions?
Steve.

Hi, erm ive never used this before but ive been trying to find some help since i downloaded the new mac messenger.
when i went to log in to my messenger 5.1.1 i was told that i needed to upgrade to 6.0.1 before i could continue using the service, a message asked me if i wanted to do this so i agreed and after downloading i followed the instructions and saved it to my applications. when i clicked on it to sign in, the setup menu did not appear as said in the instructions, only the sign in screen. therefore, i went to sign in with my hotmail address that worked fine on the 5.1.1 version and it continues to not allow me. my address and password is not incorrect.
i would really appreciate if somebody could help me because its becoming really frustrating as i need to keep in touch with friends and family.
version 5.1.1 was fine and i didn't want to upgrade but it stated that otherwise i could not continue use?!
does anyone know what could be the problem?? i would be really grateful if someone could help??

I have the same problem; when trying to sign in, the following message comes up:

"Sign in to Microsoft Messenger failed because the service is not responding. The service is not available or you may not be connected to the Internet."

Now, I am connected to the internet through a Belkin wireless router which is connected to my PC. I am currently using a Macbook and Microsoft Messenger is really annoying!

I tried changing to previous versions, versions which simply say "you will not be able to log-in unless you download the latest version". I also read that the 6.0.0 version had sign-in problems, and the 6.0.1 version was supposed to solve that. Well Microsoft, you didn't!

I also tried to change my password so its status is "very strong" (according to the Windows Live password scale") but still I can't sign on.

Please help me out if you can. Thank you!

I emailed microsoft for a login solution with messenger 6. They sent the following directions which worked for me.

1. Open the following folder:

libraryPreferencesMicrosoft

2. Delete the following files:

- Com.microsoft.Messenger.plist
- Com.microsoft.MessengerDaemon.plist
- MSN Messenger User Cache

Messenger for mac seems to be having a wierd effect on my internet connection... it crashes my network on sign in... I have to 'unplug' the router and then I am back... very wierd. I am using a mac mini duo 2gb ram and the latest version of messenger.

Resetting the password worked for me! Make sure that you go thru all the steps, including choosing a new question/answer for next time otherwise it will tell you that the password you just created is wrong in MSN messenger.

I upgraded today because v5.1.1 wouldn't sign in for the last couple of days (since the release of v6.0.1 I suppose). It signs in but automatically signs out after a few seconds telling me that the service is unavailable. Changed the password to a "strong" length but it didn't work, same problem happening. I don't understand why v5.1.1 would stop signing in due to the release of v6.

Er. Correction to the above comment: the contact on the block list that's causing trouble is messenger@microsoft.com, not messenger@msn.com.
