Apple close to announcing wireless iPod?

It looks like I might be replacing my 3 week old iPod sooner than I anticipated. Several tipsters to Engadget are saying that Apple is going to be launching a wireless iPod, with a widescreen, 'very near future.' WiFi enabled, widescreen, video iPods? Sounds good to me, but let's hope they get more than 10 minutes of battery life.

Oh, and as always, this is a rumor. TUAW is not responsible for any sense of hopelessness or ennui associated with finding out this rumor is unfounded. Believe at your own risk.

Seriously - if there is going to be an anouncement of a new video / wireless iPod - then there should be a Special Event planned for very soon. I have yet to hear or read about anything planned. Apple would need a few weeks to plan- taking us close to November as it is - and if they want the holiday sales... If this is going to happen, it should happen soon. I am betting it won't be this year. I hope I loose that bet!

I read speculation that this new iPod wouldn't actually be an iPod, but a "dumb terminal". meant for streaming of audio, video and photos. Interesting...

My 2 cents, I think that Apple will release something similar sooner or later
can't have that Zune thing snapping up all the glory not for a minute. Besides its due time they came out wih an iPod with a larger screen at least. I've been holding out on the new ones coz I figured they would do somthing like this. They did this when I bought my 4th gen iPod. About a week later the color photo iPods came out. Look for something sometime before this month is out.

A "true" video iPod would be larger, more expensive, and have less battery life than the existing iPod (which happens to play video). And how often do consumers want to watch 90-minute videos on a handheld device?

There's no sizeable market for a "true" video iPod, the same way there was no sizeable market for a film called "Snakes on a Plane." Especially since there is already a video-capable model available with plenty of storage (80GB), plenty of battery life, and a proven design.

This rumor is no more true now than it was the previous 26 times.

See! I knew something like this was going to happen!! So I went and bought Ipod Nano's for my sisters (3 of'em BTW) and got that out of my system because I could just feel that new iPod was on it's way, I hope that I'm not disappointed.

I don't get the fuss over this ... a wireless, video, touch-screen ipod. Sure it'd be cool, but imagine the power consumption. Until somebody makes a breakthrough in battery-life, there's not much to this.

Seriously . . . isn't this starting to get a little old? How about a new rumor or something? Whatever happened to the iphone/iCamera rumors?

Apple can't rush this out just because MS is going to have similar features. If they can't keep the battery life and interface quality at least as good as the current devices, they'll be shooting themselves in the foot.

Let's hope it's true this time. There has been so much talk about this one. Timing would be perfect if Apple can manage to put this out around the same time as the Zune. Really perfect.
I don't think this will be announced as the 6th generation iPod, more a new member to the family. The 'normal' iPod (can't really call it a video ipod, Apple never labelled it as such) has always been about music, the video functions on the current models are mere extras, a little dish on the side.
Wifi could be usefull for lots of thins, if implemented right. And battery life is good. As a solution, why don't they just put two batteries in those things. These batteries aren't that big, and the possible removal of the clickwheel just might free up some extra space. Just a thought.

Microsoft isn't doomed at all any time soon, but that chunky Zune certainly is.
