Apple brings (a little) web 2.0 to iPod nano RED site

I've been getting somewhat annoyed with Apple's aging website for a while now, as it still even contains the striped elements of Jaguar in its navigation at the top. Not that I have any problem with Jaguar, mind you (though I have a hard time with the possibility of giving up Tiger), but for a company who's so progressive, and even a CEO who says you should upgrade iPods at least once a year, I'm just surprised we haven't seen some sort of Tiger/Unified update to just the navigation, if anything (the rest of their site, admittedly, is designed darn well).

Setting aside my gripes for a moment, reader Mark Fleser noticed that the new page for the iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED which was just announced shows that all this fancy new web 2.0 stuff hasn't been lost on Apple. Granted, this new use of AJAXy goodness seems to be only present on the Technical Specifications button at the bottom of the page, but it's a pretty handy implementation and possibly a sign of good things to come.

JClark is referring to a feature similar to http://alistapart.com/articles/dropdowns/ - but I don't think it'd have the cool javascript slide effect they're after:) Though I agree, it'd be a hell of a lot smaller in code.

Aside from confusing the technical term above - I'd just second the agreement that they can't even validate proper HTML, nor can they take the time to fix their aged CMS so that inline styles are a thing of the past. I know they have talent there, I talk with some of their developers and designers on ichat everyday... it's a shame that they can't be that forward thinking. It's gotta be hell that MSN search results are more valid HTML/CSS than Apple's own website; and we all know how us designers love MS browsers...

I think Apple needs to keep a little retro so their site still matches Jaguar etc. There are still plenty of users who still use Jaguar, Puma and twice this week I've advised two users on Apple Discussions that it's probably time to upgarde from Ceetah!

What surprises me most is that the iPod Red page(and unlike many websites) seems to work flawlessly in IE5.50.4803.2300CD (actual version number - groan) which I'm currently using on this work PC.

I don't have .Mac and I don't know if they've rolled it out yet, but their new .Mac webmail interface looks like it's going to be AJAXlicious.

While it was a mistake for David to say this was AJAXy, I would probably consider scriptalious web 2.0 tech (which was the title of the article)

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Just to point out, you can do that kind of "show and hide" effect using CSS, you don't even have to use Javascript if you don't want to.

Welcome to 2005. Apple.com has been a leader in much web technology; if you haven't noticed their heavy adoptation of Javascript by now, this is your fault alone. Check out sites like Pro, Apeture, Store Locator, iTunes, etc.

Uhhh.. Apple has been using AJAX on their site long before this Red iPod feature.... Maybe you've never been to Apple.com/pro or any of the other sections? Forms that don't have redirects... Links that load in-line from other pages.... on the pro section alone there is 5 instances of xmlhttprequest.....

The best "AJAXy" thing on the apple site is the widget at the bottom of this page: http://www.apple.com/itunes/weekly/

It actually is AJAX (you know, pulls dyanmic content from the server) =P

This "upgrade your iPod every year" quote is rapidly becoming Steve Jobs' "I invented the Internet." What he said was "If you always want the latest and greatest, then you have to buy a new iPod at least once a year." Well duh! Why is that even considered news? He might as well have said "if you want the newest iPod, you'll have to buy the newest iPod."
