iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED Special Edition officially official
We really didn't need any more vindication that this product exists -- what with photos of them sitting on store shelves and all -- but Apple would never leave us without a nice official announcement: the officially-dubbed iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED Special Edition is now detailed on Apple's website, verifying all the facts we reported on yesterday ($10 per iPod donated to The Global Fund, same $199 price, it's red!, etc., etc.).Not much else to add, other than "buy one, you cheapskate -- it's for a good cause." Oh, and check out "The Oprah Winfrey Show" today for what will probably be the official officially official live announcement by Bono and Oprah.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]
Update: In my haste to get this post out before I had to abandon the computer, I neglected to mention (as reader Greg notes) that Apple will also begin selling new iTunes RED gift cards for $25 (though they don't mention how much is donated to the charity).

#10 It does matter what it looks like cause I don't want to listen to music on something that looks like a used tampon (they could at least had different colour earphones).
October 15 2006 at 6:10 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI went to my local Apple store today (Nashville) to get a RED iTunes card for my sister-in-law's birthday (sorry sis I couldn't buy you a red nano :P ) and none of the genii there even knew what I was talking about. "Do you mean the RED American Express card?" was the closest thing I got to a coherent response.
Where, pray tell, could I find more info about these elusive gift cards?
Oh, and glad to know I'm not the only one who wonders why this "special edition" nano doesn't come in an 8 gig flavor... GRR!
#9 who cares what it looks like? Its for a charity, and i also agree with number 8, if people have the money to just chuck at a new nano that you dont even need like most TUAW bloggers seem to, how many iPods you guys have these days? Why dont you just give the cash to the charity? Unfortuntly im still stuck with a 3rd Gen iPod as i dont have that sort of cash to chuck around. Im sure the people the money goes to would be most grateful.

October 13 2006 at 1:53 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOr how about we all make a little sacrifice, not buy an iPod at all, and donate all $199 to the global fund. Why is it that we have to be bribed to help those that are suffering? Do we honestly believe that we'll feel better about ourselves and really feel like we're making a difference because we're carrying around a red iPod? I hope not. Sorry to rant... Here's the link if you'd like to make a difference:

The Global Fund? What, the Human Fund didn't pick up the phone?
Who's against funding the globe? Certainly not me.
iLounge says it's 10% on the gift cards too.

October 13 2006 at 11:19 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyBeside just mentioning 'the global fund' why not add some few words about how all the RED products are designed to help AIDS treatments in Africa? Its an important cause, it'd be nice to see TUAW do more than think its just a red iPod.
