Newsweek interviews Steve Jobs

Stephen Levy, Newsweek's top tech guy, recently sat down with his Steveness to ruminate about the iPod's 5th anniversary. The interview covers lots of ground including iTunes Store pricing, the coolness of the iPod, and if Apple is worried about the Zune (I don't want to ruin the interview for you, but the folks in Cupertino aren't shaking in their boots about the Zune).

As always Steve has some interesting things to share, like his love for Levis. Sadly, black turtlenecks were not mentioned.

THE VIDEO THAT STEVE JOBS DOESN'T WANT TO SEE:

He HATES it when people go crazy for an iPod's competitor.

Jon... that is a wonderful point that pinpoints exactly what makes a company admirable and truly successful.

Ethem, you're reading into Jobs's comments way too literally. He isn't saying that wires are the way to go. He is saying that complicated ways to bring people together isn't. Essentially he is saying that the means is too complex to justify the ends.

What I found most interesting about the article is the last question. When asked whether music will continue to be the epicenter of the iPod, his stance changed from the typical and unhesitant yes (stupid), to more of a maybe. It's almost as if he does see what it is he has planned ahead but at the same time is unsure if it will catch on. At least, that's what I read from it.

The “two feet of headphone cable” bit... too cute... and so true.

I think Jobs screwed up this time. There is no "vision thing" in this interview. He says "You're much better off to take one of your earbuds out and put it in her ear. Then you're connected with about two feet of headphone cable."

So why did Apple create AirPort? Why will Apple unveil iTV next months? We can still use cables for TV connection, right? Why will (may be) Apple unveil wireless iPod in November?

Am i missing something?

Some great quotes from Jobs in the interview. Some of his typical ironic modesty and some hardhitting talk too of the Zune make it a good read!

Newsweek: iPods now have video, games, audio books and podcasts. Will iPods always be about the music?

Steve: Who knows?

Hmmm what could the iPod possibly transform into next? Maybe into an iPhone, Steve? Hahahaha

"A lot of quality is communicated through a feeling that people have. They don't understand exactly why, but they know that a lot of care and love was put into the designing of the product."

And that's exactly why Apple and Google are eating into MS' market share. MS isn't making Zune to bring music to the people or change the industry, they're making it because a large market exists for it and they see it as being a profitable enterprise. And I think that's precisely the reason why it will fail.

My favorite part:

Microsoft has announced its new iPod competitor, Zune. It says that this device is all about building communities. Are you worried?

In a word, no. I've seen the demonstrations on the Internet about how you can find another person using a Zune and give them a song they can play three times. It takes forever. By the time you've gone through all that, the girl's got up and left! You're much better off to take one of your earbuds out and put it in her ear. Then you're connected with about two feet of headphone cable.

narco.
