Checkout - point of sale for Mac (beta)

Jasper Hauser and company have been busy, as Disco isn't the only thing pot on their oven. Behold: Checkout, a point of sale app (in beta) for store owners running Mac OS X. Boasting a 15 minute learning curve, Checkout has an impressive lineup of features, like:
  • Interoperability - "export anything you want"
  • Easy Backups - the database is just one file, with a .Mac Backup QuickPick included (hint hint to other devs)
  • Bookkeeping super powers for maximum accountant happiness
  • Address Book syncing
  • "Extensive" reporting
  • High-Speed input for more better schmoozing with customers
Checkout's site offers a number of screencast Quicktours to help you get an idea of everything it can do. I personally don't run a retail store, but from looking at Checkout, I'm starting to wish I did. While Checkout is in beta, pricing and an official release date are still TBD.

Just tried out this app. It still has a lot of missing features:

-the invoice template cannot be customized (It doesn't fit my pre-printed letterhead paper)
-there is no import feature (I want to switch from another app to Checkout but I'm not going to enter all product details etc by hand when I already have a database of them...)
-products cannot be categorized (I want to be able to have a break-down between different categories of products I sell in my reports)

These are all features I currently have in a MS Access database which I set up myself in very little time with very little knowledge about Access. For professional programmers it shouldn't be that hard to include those features...

I've been kicking around the idea of an "insanely great" POS app with other developers for a while now. The first thing we always agree on is that it has to be a web app, not a desktop app. I'm sure Checkout is very cool, but I think they made a kind of fundamental mistake. Nonetheless, I look forward to trying it.

This looks very fun but it is not actually fit my business. Can somebody tells me if such a program (beautyfull UI, user friendly,…) exist for bar restaurant POS?

Now this is a fun app! Much better than trying to pass off a $15 cd burning application as the next best thing since sliced bread.

I was fortunate enough to be given a demo of Checkout at Apple Expo Paris (along with Disco) and it looked amazing then.

Would be neat if they could license the iSight UPC code scanning technology from the Delicious Library folks. It makes for a pretty decent poor man's barcode scanner, especially since all the new Macs now come with built-in iSights.

I've been pre-beta testing this app for a while now, and I can tell you it's very pleasing to work with.

The app looks and behaves like an OS X native app should and the boasted 15 minute learning curve might even be on tle long side. It's by far easier and more consistent than anything with similar functionality I've seen so far.

Besides all this, the database underlying the app seems to be very solid and responsive as is the development team when it comes to fixing reported bugs :)

I sure hope dealers and Apple pick this one up as there seems to be high demand for a decent mac-based POS-system.

And the Team behind Checkout is simply awesome, I met them at the Apple Expo.

And I love the way it has been develloped :-)
