TUAW Exclusive: MacHeist details

From the people who brought you My Dream App comes the next big thing in Mac software. You might have seen other sites talking about MacHeist, but unlike everyone else in our little corner of the internet, we actually know what MacHeist is all about.

Here's what we know:
  • The eventual product of the site will be a deeply discounted software bundle only made available to users. I've had a look at the contents of the bundle as they stand so far, and they are, as those crazy kids say "killer dude"
  • Dozens of Mac developers have signed up to participate in MacHeist
  • Throughout the event, users can participate in mysterious "heists" to gain an even deeper discount on the bundle as well as special freebies.
  • The event will be invitation only, at least for the first couple of weeks, with users selected out of those who signed up on the MacHeist or My Dream App sites.
  • This encrypted message has appeared on the MacHeist RSS feed:

3><(||_|$1\/1+`/

\X/@|\|+ +|-|3 1|\|$1[)3 $(00|* @|\|[) @ |-|3@[) $+@|2+? 1|\|q|_|1|23 +|-||20|_|6|-| +|-|3 @|*|*|20|*|21@+3 (|-|@|\||\|3|$.

Even with what little info we do have, it sounds like MacHeist will be just as much fun as My Dream App, if not more so, and full of great deals to boot!

Despite the exclusivity it's a great deal. Word will spread through the grapevine and more people will want to take part in this. I hope they keep everyone updated. Those who were invited should give feedbacks so that others can sign up next time they open it for everyone. Keep the freebies coming! :)

Ha ha ha

I was thinking of trying a frequency count on the message :)

Good thing I didn't try.

I don't think it's hate. Yes, there are other sites around, and I visit them. But it's sad to see a site fall in love with a developer. There are lots of cool developers and apps out there. Consistently favoring one developer is not helping the Mac scene or the readers. I don't see anything about an RSS reader called Vienna on this site, I saw it on another site. I think it's worth a mention.

I don't think its MyDreamApp hate, its more jumping on the 'lets-kick-TUAW' bandwagon that seems to have started rolling in the last 6 months or so. There's a trend at the moment to bitch about anything and everything that gets posted, which is starting to get very old. The pendulum will start to swing the other way soon though, as we're quickly descending to "ooh, you shouldn't have put a comma there" type BS.

If people don't like it they should jump to another site, instead of spending even more time on this one telling everyone else how much they don't like it.

What's with the MyDreamApp hate? I thought it was well done and fun. I usually don't keep up with that kinda stuff, but it sucked me in. I wouldn't have known if they hadn't talked about it on this site either.

Do you just have a problem with marketing in general, just imaginative marketing? I mean, for guys who are trying to sell software in a piracy-laden age, they seem to be doing well via this route, and as long as they keep making good stuff that addresses needs I have, I'll keep buying them. I can't imagine I'm alone.

@Floggy Bottom
Oh shut up, just cause you're sour doesn't mean you have to try and ruin something loads of people enjoyed.

You know, now that Disco is in public beta and MyDreamApp is over, I really, really hoped we might get at least a week's reprieve before you got suckered into regurgitating press releases again.

You know what? The "next big thing in Mac software" is Leopard. This, on the other hand, is an over-hyped stunt.

Oh well.
