iPod shuffle 2G and Radio Remote - separated at birth?

I was rooting through a friend's treasure trove of iPod accessories yesterday when he whipped out his Radio Remote for the iPod. He then pointed out the striking similarity it has to the new iPod shuffle 2G he just picked up - and behold! They clearly must be related; possibly separated at birth - long lost siblings, happy to be reunited after many long quarters of product updates. Look! I think the shuffle is smiling!
"Gee, you've really let yourself go," said the Remote. "But who cares! C'mere, gimme a hug big guy!"
Ahhh... ain't

I *so* called this years ago.. I said when the first shuffle first came out that the next shuffle would resemble the iPod remote. At the time of course it was the 4G remote.
Then I got the radio remote for the nano, clipped it on and went round saying 'look they've made my ipod shuffle!!' and everyone went 'no way.. it's a remote' which of course it was and it became a little running joke between me mates.
.. Fast forward to last monday when my 2G shuffle arrived, luckily no one had seen about it at all so I clipped it on and went round saying 'look! the new iPod' and everyone went 'yeah yeah its a new remote' man the look on their faces when they realised it was a real shuffle!! Amazing!!

I just got my new Shuffle yesterday from the Apple store in San Francisco and almost bought a radio remote by accident...

I've been looking for a nice photo comparison of these for a while now I had decided to just take my remote with me the next time I had to go to the Apple Store. Good to see one cropped up.
Funny thing, when I first bought my radio remote somebody mistook it for a new iPod model (it was half a year before the new Shuffle release.)

If only the 2G shuffle acted as a radio remote when plugged in to full-sized iPods.

The first gen shuffle inspired the Front Row remote and the 1st gen iPod remote inspired the 2nd gen shuffle. Seems like a dead end to me! No where else to go!

Duh! Jeez, it must be a slow day there at TUAW. Next thing you know, you'll be posting how the iPod Video looks very similar to the iPod Photo.
