Apple settles 17-inch Studio Display class action

Apple has agreed to a settlement in the Class Action Suit regarding allegedly defective inverter boards that caused problems with 17-inch Studio Displays. Although Apple won't admit any wrongdoing (as is usually the case in these kinds of settlements), it has agreed to settle the claim in order to avoid the exorbitant expense of a trial. The lawsuit claimed that "the inverter board of the Apple 17-inch LCD Studio Display was faulty, causing the gradient dimming of the top or bottom half of the screen of the Display and a power light to constantly blink on and off in a short-short-long pattern to signal a problem."

Under the terms of the agreement, Apple will provide cash refunds ranging from $75 - $400 to claimants who had their affected displays repaired. The amount refunded will depend on when the repair was performed and whether it was an Apple repair or a repair by a a third party. Only US residents are eligible for the settlement. Additional details, claim forms and a FAQ are available on the suit info site.

How many of you are covered by this settlement and plan to submit a claim?

I have never aware of that kind of problem. I have been using the 17-inch studio display (silver logo) since Feb/2003 and no problem at all.

I'd rather Apple just send money to everyone who bought one and can send in a picture of the display showing the problem. I don't want to go through the hassle of repairing the damned thing because I no longer use it. I just want money for having to stare at a crappy screen and blinking power light for so long.

lovely... it cost me 150$ to get the part to fix my 20" lcd and it went out again after a week. This does seem to be a rather annoying design problem

best bit was when i tried to disable the light w/o disabling the power options from the prefs first. It would send my g5 into open firmware. Any1 who suffered this issue will testify to the fact that the dimmed screen can be put up with.. the blinking light on the other hand...

Damn.. This is EXACTLY what happened to my monitor about two years ago. Less than a month after the Apple Care expired.

Around the same time, my dual-processor machine had a meltdown, and I had to buy a new machine / monitor.

I don't know if the two were related, but...

Despite my frustration, I was woo-ed by the new iMacs. I figured having the monitor/computer all in one, and all covered by Apple Care was the best option.
