MacHeist registration open to TUAW readers for 24 hours
We started out with 25 MacHeist invites for you TUAW readers, but we were quickly blown away by the sheer landslide of interest (over 800 requests and still counting) in this latest Mac software event from the minds behind My Dream App. Since things simply became too difficult for us to manage, Phillip Ryu and crew cut us some slack and opened their registration doors for TUAW readers - but only for 24 hours. Coincidentally, the first MacHeist mission ends in 24 hours (11:59 PM EST Monday, November 13th), so you'd better start clicking. Just follow this link to a super-secret MacHeist registration page for your TUAW-reading eyes only (ok fine: I blogged it, so it might not be secret anymore, but it still sure is super). We're sorry we couldn't hook everyone up who originally requested an invite, but we hope this open registration makes us even.
Now, go forth and complete your missions. That safe isn't going to loot itself!

If anyone wants my invites, you can contact me via my blog.
I'm finding this to be a major waste of time, and not very enjoyable. But you are welcome to my 5-6 remaining invites if you are so inclined.

What a load of bull "Super secret!" "Invite Only!". But there are at least three places I've found where anyone can sign up, and each person gets about seven times more invites than they should.
I realize that this is a marketing gimmick, but the attraction is ruined once all the cattle realize it.

Well, there are 4 digits in the macheist code. There are only 10,000 combinations. If 10,000 people tried each number you could just get it for free.

Looks like my Bullshit detector was dead on when I posted such in the original thread. It's not hard to close comments to a post after it reaches 250 posts and send out the codes to those first 250 who did in fact ask in a comment. Did it happen? Nope.
So, is this going to be as frigtarded as the "My Dream App" was? That whole thing was a colossal waste of bandwidth to vote on useless gimmicky applications nobody wants nor needs. What would have been better for these folks was if they charged a $1 door cover fee to register.

MDA was interesting... and although some people (#7) may find the applications 'useless and gimmicky' others are clearly interested in them. MacHeist is crap though, I really don't get why people are so into it. I think I'd rather, like... pay for software.. then go through all that garbage.

It's something to do though. Cure for the boredom. I have a lot to be getting on with right now so i can't really afford the time but i've still wasted a few minutes on it out of curiousity. For some people it'll be a great, fun thing to do with maybe some discounts and freebies at the end.

"I DON'T WANT TO BELONG TO ANY CLUB THAT WILL ACCEPT ME AS A MEMBER"
Oh FFS!!! Not another frigging blog entry about MacScheisse. Can't you just have ONE blog post that says "Competition, MacScheisse, visit this frigging site"?
WTF is wrong with TUAW? Is there some kind of big love thing going on with NetNewsWire, MyDreamApp, Disco, MacScheisse, that we need updates every 5 minutes?

Totally agree with Ridiculous. I got bored of Macheist after 5 minutes of playing with it - if software is good enough it'll sell itself. All this promotion smacks of trying to make up for an app that isn't up to scratch (Disco anyone?) Then I come to TUAW to find some up to date news, and all I get is more of this crap shoved down my throat.
I think its time for serious Mac users to look elsewhere for their information.

What a bunch of sour tossers you lot are. For some of us, this is just a little highlight to the otherwise boring world of checking out new software.
Heaven forbid that any of the software companies actually try and make us smile every now and then, and perhaps add a little entertainment to the mix.
It's so entertaining that you actually take the time to post about something you claim not to be interested in.

Amen slingshot.
I come to TUAW for news about apple products, not blogvertising. I'm really getting sick and tired of these gimmicks. MacZot started it by selling mystery software, and TUAW fell hook line and sinker for it.
Is the AdSense revenue not what you guys were hoping for? I don't get it. They don't even bother with the pretense of exclusivity anymore, so why are we surprised here. I think TUAW can cover stuff like heist and dream app, just chill out with it. I don't need to know about each round of voting, if I care, I'll make sure I vote, if I don't (I don't) it just spams up my rss reader. Likewise, now that we all know we can sign up for heist, there is no reason to cover it again until they release the product.
I'm serious, weekly heist updates will drive me away from the site.

Hammo, I understand what you're saying and I agree, to an extent... The problem is something is going on when there is a constant barrage of blog posts and news items related to these 'promos'. I think two posts is enough. One to say there is an upcoming event, and another to say the event has started. Look, I don't care or mind if they're all buddies and they want to hype up their stuff, but I come to TUAW and other places for a wide variety of Apple related news. Zot and Disco and Heist were interesting to read about the first time, but like MyDreamApp, when you keep on pumping the same news, its easy to see how shallow it all is. These guys are bigging themselves up, but you know, the bigger they come, the harder they fall - witness the backlash against MyDreamApp and Disco.

Hammo, you've either missed or chosen to ignore my point - which is not related to Macheist per se (I can just avoid their site), but rather to the way TUAW has become an extra tool in their marketing department.
If the kids behind Macheist want to go about their business in this way then fine, but I don't want to see one of my major sources of Apple news constantly pushing this stuff at me.
I don't know if its a commercial arrangement and money is changing hands, or if its just a case of giving your mates a bit of free publicity. Either way its starting to turn me off a site which I used to read avidly. Shame.

For all of you complainers, do you not realize that people obviously are interested in MacHeist, thus the 250 comments that were in the original invite post? Obviously, they are posting on things the readers seem interested in.

Ridiculous and Slingshot,
Fair point, I didn't make reference to the 'pimping' or 'overreporting' (you choose which, as I am not sure that we'll really ever know) of the information via the site, and for that I apologise.
The guys here at TUAW are no doubt excited and interested (and perhaps commercially interested), along with many of the readers - but I guess it could become overload for those who are not.
I don't mind too much about about the irrelevant articles that come my way, at least it shows that the site is busy and up to date, etc.
I've started reading the site through google reader. Saves me time. ;-)
So the real question becomes - TUAW, what are you getting for all the reporting, or is it just becuase you are keen.......?

MacHeist is crap. It does not work and the developers are not up to fix it. Spare yourself the trouble of a scavenger hunt that isn't even fun because it's broken.

It does work. Even if you don't want to go on that paper chase, you can get clues or the whole solution, step-by-step, in their forum.
For the first assignment, you get Chat Transcript Manager, Assignment Planner and Soulver for free (+ 2$ off the mysterious final software packet).
So, it's nothing spectacular for now, but it's free software nonetheless..
