Security Update 2006-007

Fire up Software Update, folks, it is time to make your Mac more secure. That's right, Apple has released Security Update 2006-007 in lots of different flavors (10.3.9 client, 10.3.9 server, 10.4.8 client Intel, 10.4.8 client PPC, 10.4.8 Server PPC, 10.4.8 Server Universal).

What does it do? Quoth Apple, it improves the security of:
  • AirPort
  • ATS
  • CFNetwork
  • ClamAV (PPC only)
  • Finder
  • Font Book
  • Font Importer
  • Installer
  • OpenSSL
  • PHP
  • PPP
  • Samba
  • Security Framework
  • VPN
  • WebKit
  • gnuzip
  • perl
That is a pretty serious list, so I would get to updating.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Let me tell what else this update does: IT KILLS YOUR MAC! I installed this on my quad g5 running 10.4.2. The moment after when I went to restart the once perfectly functioning mac did nothing but run the fans on high. No lights. no USB functions, no hard drive spin. Dead. So would advise everyone to steer clear of this update. Oh yeh and when I talked to Apple about this, they wouldn't fess up to the fact that they are using us as the beta testers for thier shoddy programming skills. I should have known better. After checking the apple discussion groups, there are apparently big problems with 2006-007.
Thanks Apple, you've cost me thousands of dollars in loss to my business.

Well I'll be! Thanks Mark - I too had Helvetica Fractions and after disabling it came up trumps. Great tip. Just goes to show, too many fonts can be a bad thing.

Dan:
It could be a font you have loaded that overrides a default system font by accident. I've had to disable a few fonts in FontExplorer since they interfere with the default fonts Apple uses. If you make a sticky in the dashboard and it appears the same this might be the case. For me it was disabling Helvetica Fractions.

It's not the update that messed with Google Notifier. It was doing that to me before I installed the update. I uninstalled it since I figured I had my Mail.app open all the time anyway, it really wasn't serving a purpose.

I dont know if this is related but after the update, my Google Notifier keeps prompting me to login over and over and over and over and over and over...

Maybe its coincidence or a problem on Google's side but I can login to my gmail acct just fine on the web.

No patch for the disk image mounter vulnerability, rated as 'highly critical' by Secunia. This is pretty bad...

I have my reservations about this too. All the details in the information box about the update appear to me as unintelligible characters. See my screen http://www.dmsukltd.com/hawk/tuaw/security_update_2006-007.pdf

Is anybody else experiencing similar?

Mark 2000: You're probably running into a known bug with the latest Linksys router firmware - Macs can't get a DHCP address from the WRT54G and GS. Either you have to downgrade the firmware (which for me causes the router to lock up and stop passing all traffic) or set a static IP. dslreports.com's Linksys forum and Linksys' own forum has many people commenting on this problem, with no resolution in sight.

After installing this on both my macbook and macbook pro I am unable to get an IP address from my linksys router after connecting (making it a useless connection). Funny enough I can stll connect to my neighbor's unprotected network (shhh, don't tell him).

Well this sucks... I just did the update, and when I restarted, my Mac just sits at a gray screen playing the last second of the startup sound over and over again...
