iPod Cold Weather Care: Loving Your iPod

Cold weather is upon us. So don't forget about your poor sweet iPod.

Keep it bundled up. In use, your iPod's battery works best between 32F to 95F (0C to 35C). For storage, Apple suggests that range extends to -4F to 113F (-20C to 45C).

If you're jogging in sub-arctic temperatures (or, to be more realistic, sub-freezing ones), consider keeping your iPod in a pocket or "iPod sock" to insulate it from the bitter cold.

Apple says to "keep iPod comfy". We appreciate their highly technical phrasing for this important operational issue.

Hey, i left my nano in my car and it was prob 15 degrees F for about 2 night. it didnt turn on because the battery must of drained.. so i charged it, and when i turn it on now, i only see half of the screen and the other half is distored and unlegible to be read.. so dont leave it out... :(

I left my iPod in my car today at 7:30. It was an average of 11°F until noon, when I got back in my car to use my iPod again. After about five minutes, I got the "super-low-battery icon" and couldn't listen to my music until I warmed it up. So yeah, I'd say to follow the recommended temps :)

If you take an 5G iPod out in -25c the LCD will take one some weird rainbow colouring which is only decernable when off. Other than that it works fine, battery life is a bit down.

At -30c same as above but you know its freaking cold when its -30 and below so one tends not to whip out the iPod from ones winter coat :)

I'm not so sure about that range. I have a color iPod 20gig and it has serious problems once the temperature dips below 40 or so. It will turn on fine but the scroll wheel gets very temperamental. When I leave it in the car overnight I have to sit on the iPod with the seat warmers on to get it running properly. Once it's warmed up it's fine.

That the same operating temps for the nano? I wonder if the cold limits are there for the hard drive or the LCD. And if either, what about the shuffle?

I can see it now: someone in a schoolyard with their tongue stuck to a Gen2 Shuffle.
