SafariDepot: who needs .Mac to sync bookmarks?
Striking another blow to .Mac's usefulness, SafariDepot allows bookmark synchronization over FTP and FTPS (secure FTP). It's actually a clever little app that also includes a couple of scripts that are ripe for automation through Quicksilver, Login Items, cron jobs, and more. It's also smart about downloading and replacing Safari's local bookmarks: once a download is run, it will automatically restart Safari (if it's running) and backup your local copy before replacing it with the version from your server.SafariDepot might not have that "it just works" aura about it that .Mac Safari syncing does (since you have to roll your own automation or *gasp* run it manually), but it's certainly yet another alternative to one of .Mac's prized features.

I'll have to check it out. as .Mac Safari syncing does not have the "it just works" aura at all.

This isn't much better than manually copying your bookmarks file from one computer to the other. You still need to know which machine is most up to date, and it cant merge different collections to create a single unified collection.

This is not syncing. It just replaces all the bookmarks you already have with the once on the server.

Would would really rock is to have google browser sync for safari, so it would sync bookmarks between Macs and PCs. This extension is the solely reason I use firefox on the mac.

Ditto number 4.
Google Browser Sync rocks and I have higher hopes Google will make a Safari version (solid plugins are possible as shown by the great PithHelmet) than this evolving that far. It's a high bar after all, combinig bookmarks, tabs and history seamlessly. Come on Apple, lend a hand in Safari 3.0! (And make it compatible with Google's Sync on Firefox, that would swing!)

@4 & 5
Do you really want to offer all your information to Google? Every page you've visited? Every password you're using?

It's called SFTP, not FTPS.

Google Browser Sync is the bomb. It's not like I have bookmarks for building homemade bombs or anything. It also will let you restore web pages from your previous browsing session.
If there was a Google plug-in for Safari, I'd probably switch to it. But until then I guess I'll stick with Firefox.
I willcheck out that BookIt app- thanks for the link! Too bad it appears synchronization is thru .Mac only, FTP would be nice.

Wow, I coincidentally said bomb two times in one post. Maybe I shouldn't expose my personal data to Google...
I meant to say that I wasn't worried about exposing my bookmarks to Google, it's not like I have anything even possibly interesting. Not even porn links.
