Mac App a Day launches
Mac App a Day launched this morning with their first free giveaway for TuneX, a utility that allows iTunes access from any application. Very nice. The MAaD folks plan on giving away 5000 copies of fully licensed applications every day during the month of December.
Unfortunately, whoever designed the site kind of missed the point that visitors would simply like to find a "Download" button. Instead, I ended up searching the page source code to track down the download link. Way at the bottom of the page, looking like every other header you'll find "Download your copy now - while we've still got one to give you". Click this.

Um... It links me to a 403 Forbidden page when I try to download the application. :
December 01 2006 at 4:24 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySame here. I was going to download it here at work on my Windows system (which works routinely on every other Mac download site) and FTP it to my Mac at home, but got the "Sorry, you've already downloaded this" error.
I think it's a cool idea and a generous offer, and I've got no problem with the 5,000 cutoff. I just wish the back-end stuff were wired up better.
That's the problem; nobody designed the site. It's nothing more than a horribly configured WordPress install with an innapropriate theme. I wish they'd get the flippin' hint.

December 01 2006 at 2:52 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI didn't have a problem downloading the file, but I bought Synergy a few months ago, which basically does the same thing. Oh well, free is free
December 01 2006 at 1:37 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOk. it's smaller than an old-fashioned floppy disk (500k) let it download already! Of course, you don't let safari auto open stuff right? So, you don't want it? right-click, move to trash. easy.
Give away free ice-cream and have people scream that it's not vanilla and that you just handed them the cone without asking if they wanted it. whiners.
This is an incredibly stupid download system. I clicked on the link from TUAW and it brought me right to the page that started downloading it -- but I didn't want it before I read about what it was, so I clicked Cancel on the FireFox dialog asking me where I wanted to save it. Once I decided I did want it, the site said I already downloaded it!
So I remote desktopped into my Windows machine at work, which only has IE on it, and proceeded to the download page. IE popped that bar at the top telling me it had blocked a download unless I wanted it. So I told IE that I did indeed want it, but the site said I had already downloaded it!
Stupid piece of crap. Here's a brilliant idea: DON'T HAVE A WHOLE PAGE THAT AUTOMATICALLY INITIATES A DOWNLOAD. Have a big button to push that says "You can only download this once, so don't click cancel or use IE".
i had the same problem as 1 & 3
