Screencast shows off Parallels' new tricks
Mike blogged about the new Parallels Desktop beta yesterday, and he mentioned a number of the new features that he is excited about. He didn't mention 'Coherence' mode which lets you run Windows apps along side your Mac application. However, I couldn't get this working on my MacBook Pro (I'm running Vista RC 2, and that might have something to do with it). Luckily for me, video blogger Michael Verdi has put together a great screencast showing off Coherence and a bunch of other neat new features. Check it out and marvel at the wonders of virtualization.

Coherence really makes me feel bad to the Crossover team
Now if only the Parallels guys found a way of letting each windows program have its own window...

I must say as a recent switcher (3 months ago), Parallels is amazing. I always wanted to switch, but wasn't able to because of compatibility. I bought Parallels last night and installed XP on my macbook finally with just the software I need (only 3gb of harddrive) and it works better than my windows computer itself.

I don't understand Parallels. Does it require you to have a copy of XP, like VMware?

Don't feel bad for the Crossover folks.
Crossover doesn't require Windows at all, whereas Parallels Desktop does.
This latest update rocks though!

Coherence mode is awesome. As was noted in the post, this doesn't work with Vista RC2 but it does work fabuously with XP SP2. Can't wait for 3D video and USB 2.
One feature I would like to see is the VMWare snapshot, and of course the ability to run OS X in a Parallels VM...

Bahaha --
"... which lets you run Windows apps along side your Mac Application." What, there's only one? Are we back to _that_ argument again? lol
You make Fritz laugh.

And yes, I might as well put my two cents in on Parallels:
Hats off to this lot. They continue to make my life easier. Parallels is a great product.
Cheers,

Just purchased Parrallels last week during Apple's Black Friday online sale. Now this latest beta is out, with some awesome features. Anyone know whether this will be a free upgrade to current buyers once this goes official?

meatmcguffin:
You could always crack out SeamlessRDP on your virtual machine and rDesktop (as of release 1.5) into it, which splits all windows into separate entities using X11. It has some limitations and issues, and using explorer interferes with SeamlessRDP as the window manager (task manager works great for launching things in this case.) Coherency mode is faster, though, is built right in to Parallels, and doesn't require anything extra to run.

I think the thread where the latest beta was released in mentioned it would be a free upgrade after it was properly tested.

I've always mentioned something like this would be excellent and help the transition.
Citrix has this exact same feature.
