Apple posts Vista FAQ

Apple support just posted a general Frequently Asked Questions list for Microsoft Vista at its site. Vista, which just launched, will be generally available for purchase in January. At this time, iTunes, QuickTime, Software Update and the iPod shuffle reset utility are all unsupported under Vista.

However, secret TUAW elves (*kof*David C.*kof) who have been testing Vista report that iTunes and QuickTime 7 worked flawlessly under Vista even if they're officially unsupported.

Apple promises to keep the FAQ updated over time as the facts change on the ground.

I have problem with QT on Vista RTM too.
It can't properly play MOVs in "Safe (GDI)" mode. "DX mode" doesn't works at all. In GDI mode it tries to play but with huge performance and decoding problems.

Bloody hell...

I just loaded a new Vista Enterprise PC, Loaded ITunes 7.02. It loaded music files fine but when it hit a MOV file it would crash or reboot my machine.
After about 8 times I realized it was the MOV files and then I was moving them and it crashed even in explorer when it was just getting a thunbnail. It ended up corruping my mirrored drives and I had to reload everything. :( Wife was not happy.

What? FLAWLESSLY?
Well, it's probably just me, as it usually is..
But I just installed iTunes 7.0.2 on Vista.
(I hadn't done much anything besides that, on this particular session)
I've had many problems with 7.0.1, and thought it would be a good idea to upgrade to it.
I installed, it launched..
Starting updating my library...
Blue screen of death. (a messy glitched up one at that)
PC reboots... Vista boot screen... PC reboots.
I'm stuck in a forever loop.
Safe modes don't work. Booting with last working settings doesn't work, because it probably thought that last boot was fine. (when it got up to just past the boot screen)

I'm royally screwed. I was about to use a friend's 1/2TB external and just backup over all my data this week. Vista scares me with all it's problems, and I should have done switched back to XP, way sooner.
Looks like just my luck, again. Bye bye 300GB of data, thanks iTunes + Vista.

There are definitely issues with iTunes, Quicktime and Vista. iTunes is doing something strange with disk I/O, causing it to be very slow while syncing and updating tags, etc.

Also, you sometimes will encounter a "cannot write to library" error unless you run the application as an administrator.

Quicktime's 5.1 audio seems to be broken, too.. but it might be Creative's drivers. Who knows. It took Apple forever to fix the problems with Creative's drivers under XP, so I'm guessing it'll be fixed for Vista pretty much never.

Check out my latest blog entry about iTunes sucking under Vista:

I've also tested Vista and iTunes within it (both versions 6 and 7). I wouldn't say it worked flawlessly, but it did work. Drivers for iPod are probably what are causing the most problems here because EVERYTHING I have tried to connect was either unrecognized by Vista or it forced me to download new drivers, which later were unrecognizable by Vista. I really am baffled that drivers are still causing problems at Redmond, because this is a problem that has been consistent through every major OS shift. It's time you learn, Microsoft.

Also, Apple needs to say that they are unsupported because it's technically illegal to use the Public Beta for anything other than Microsoft's own personal gain. So, since Vista was "just officially released" they wouldn't have time to fully debug it. Saying the software is supported before they debug it is not only a lie, but also a liability. Plus it really doesn't makes sense for them to jump the gun anyway, since upgrades to iTunes will almost definitely come at Macworld which is still before a detectable percentile will be using Vista. Keep in mind that those people aren't usually the people who have iPods, or if they do, they have another computer to back them up.

Nevertheless, testing Vista made me happier I primarily use a Mac.

I would like to say that QuickTime certainly does NOT work flawlessly on Vista. I am running Windows Vista Enterprise [RTM] on 3 different machines [Dell XPS m1210, Dell XPS 410, and a Dell Optiplex GX620], and QuickTime installs on all of them fine, but crashes when trying to play any .MOV file, whether it is HD or not.

Hmmm ... that makes it look to me like those particular version numbers won't be supported, which says nothing about a potential update for Vista. I'm guessing an update would be in order, as my (vague at this point) understanding suggests that certain features like access to the driver stack require some hooks in the App. I'd love to see improved iTunes and QuickTime performance under Vista. One can hope.

I've gotten things to work fine on Vista, though there was a certain iPod shuffle that I could not sync with the iTunes library on Vista RC1.
