Tangerine! 1.0

I wrote about Tangerine! when it was just a wee beta, and before it had an exclamation mark in its name. Now, Tangerine! has reached 1.0 status (and is apparently very excited about it). This app allows you to make playlists based on the tempo and the beat intensity of music.
Why would you want to do this? If you have ever been working out, jamming to your iPod in the zone and then had a slow song come on you know how that can throw you off. Tangerine! makes it easy to have high energy, or low energy, music to accompany your activities.
A license costs $24.95, and there is a 15 day demo available.

The exclamation mark is for the hopes of an Apple acquisition. I can definitely see this happening with this software. Imagine iTunes Smart Playlists based on tempo data, add even more data like Pandora, and it would be pretty amazing stuff.

They added the exclamation mark for legal reasons, because it was discovered that the name "Tangerine" had already been taken by another music-related Mac app.

I'll give it a spin. Hopefully they've ironed out the problems that it had in the beta version, namely that it couldn't detect tempo and beat intensity properly. Which was a shame, as that was the whole point of it.
I really hope this isn't going to be $24.95 for a nice GUI.

But beware the footnotes - "Tangerine! cannot analyze iTunes Store purchased songs due to the DRM"

And you would know about that how, Scott????

Ok so... Maybe I'm missing something... Isn't @4 kinda steep for something you can do yourself?
Itunes + Itunes BPM inspector (yeah its a manual process as bpm detectors are lacking on the mac).
Create smart playlists based on BPM (which can be done in itunes).
I think $25 is way too much for this.

For those who want something similar but less expensive (at the expense of a nice GUI), consider beaTunes (beatunes.com), which costs US$19.95 works on both Mac OS X and Windows. No, I am *not* affilated with them. I've yet to use either since I'm still on 10.3.9, but I'll be getting one or the other once I get Leopard.

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple bought this app from them and incorperated into iTunes like the did with Coverflow.

$24.99 is kind of steep for software you run like once.

PotionFactory was offering free licenses to the 1.0 version while it was in beta for those who submitted bugs or blogged about the program. So I got it for free and it's totally worth it and a great app. $24? Not so much.

I'm wondering how they give bloggers their free licence.
