Wil Shipley reveals Delicious Library 2 details

Wil Shipley - founder of Delicious Monster, co-founder of The Omni Group with Ken Case and Tim Wood and perhaps one of the most vocal Mac developers - has revealed some details of Delicious Library 2, a much-anticipated follow up to an app that claims a healthy selection of awards (just check the bottom of the product site). In an interview with Jacqui Cheng of Infinite Loop, Mr. Shipley waxes about his companies, charity, MacHeist controversy and - more specifically to this post - what we can expect in Delicious Library 2, and when.
New in DL2 will be support for "MUCH, MUCH larger" collections (thanks to what I assume will be the use of Apple's CoreData), smart shelves, a much updated and "snazzier, snappier" UI to align itself with Apple's iApps, lots of tiny updates to sprinkle joy in various places, as well as a couple of features he's keeping up his sleeve. As far as when DL2 ships, Wil gets somewhat suspicious with his answer: "Our aim is to ship the day Leopard ships, as we will be Leopard-only. We don't actually know when that is, which adds an extra element of excitement to this release." Hmm... he know DL2 will be Leopard-only, but he doesn't know when the Big Cat ships? I admittedly don't have much more to go on here, but something about that seems fishy. Apple's statement on Leopard, as far as we know, is still 'Spring 2007,' so we'll just have to see what happens at Macworld in January.

Does Delicious Library support vinyl? I'd love to organize my records with this. Or maybe since I don't really care about my CDs, I can just do it with that.
Fishes,

How is this fishy? Apple won't disclose to anyone outside of the company when 10.5 will ship, so it makes sense that Wil doesn't know. And if he uses 10.5 development technologies in DL 2.0 (eg, obj-c garbage collection and Core Animation) then the application will have to be Leopard-only since most of the technologies introduced in 10.5 are not compatible with previous versions of OS X.

Pah! Answere is easy. They will feature some Cover Fow like viewoptions so they need Coreanimation. And so they need Leopard.

my question is will it be a free or paid upgrade from version 1?

Sounds like a great update, I hope it's a free upgrade, o at least a cheap upgrade... I only bought the app in September and I would very much like to not have to pay for it again in the spring.

Mapping it to a media file would be great. I would love to be able to somehow click on a movie in Delicious Library and it opens up the associated movie on my external hard drive......

Am I correct in assuming that when he says "smart shelves," he means something like Smart Playlists in iTunes? (e.g. a bucket that dynamically updates itself based on certain search criteria) Oh god I sure hope so. It would be great to be able to set up, say, a shelf that lists only Anime DVD's, a shelf of Xbox 360 games that are First Person Shooters, a shelf of 80s music, or even a shelf of all of my titles that are currently out on loan.

DL would have to go so far to "align itself with Apple's iApps" that it would turn into...DVDPedia. I've never seen a product so overblown with hype as this thing.

Region 4? DVDpedia gets it, as does DVD Profiler (one of the best Windows apps out there). Mr Shipley is obviously lying on a sun lounge next to his pool full of cash as various people have more or less begged for Region 4 support since DL was originally released and he's done nada about it.

Donald (#8): DVDPedia's had Smart Libraries that do exactly what you're describing for over a year now. They work just like Smart Playlists. DVDPedia even has an import just for Delicious Library data.

Sounds like Apple is going to buy Delicious and include it in iLife '07?

Yes. I want to know if its a paid upgrade too... Im not a massive fan of paid upgrades unless it actually offers something which a massive massive step up from what went before.
Second, yes, Delicious Library supports Vinyls. I discovered this the other day. Just scan the Vinyl in, and if youre lucky, itll find it on Amazon.

it will be a paid update.
he says 2.0
often, sharewares editor changes the major number version (2.0 here) when they want to emphasize the Bold move toward new features and the need to pay for it.

Nope, he said on the blog entry hes going to switch from xml to a full fledged mysql database. So, mysql is going to be the savior here, not CoreData.

i doubt they're using a mysql database. most likely the sqlite, the same way safari stores the rss feed information.
*puts on marketer hat* i've been working on what could be described as "delicious library online": http://lib.rario.us
i also have a delicious library import option if you're using that, and the site also has rss feeds of your collection, and an csv excel export for backing up or using elsewhere... i hope some of you find some use for it. :)

Oooh, mysql. That's got my attention. Now, for the win, will I be able to keep various album- and track-level metadata, such as composer, duration and notes?
One of my biggest complaints about DL (apart from its sluggishness) is the lack of detail in the data it stores. I like lots of useful data, and don't really give a flying flip about useless crap like how much my CD is currently selling for on Amazon.
And why DOES DL only get data from Amazon? What's wrong with the CDDB and FreeDB? I've been scratching my head over that one for some time.
I'll pay the price for a whole new license if the new DL 2.0 works the way I hope it will.

Against my better judgement I registered DL in Sept. even though rumors of version 2 were already floating around. I sure hope they offer FREE upgrades for persons who registered after a certain date.
