Wil Shipley reveals Delicious Library 2 details

Wil Shipley - founder of Delicious Monster, co-founder of The Omni Group with Ken Case and Tim Wood and perhaps one of the most vocal Mac developers - has revealed some details of Delicious Library 2, a much-anticipated follow up to an app that claims a healthy selection of awards (just check the bottom of the product site). In an interview with Jacqui Cheng of Infinite Loop, Mr. Shipley waxes about his companies, charity, MacHeist controversy and - more specifically to this post - what we can expect in Delicious Library 2, and when.
New in DL2 will be support for "MUCH, MUCH larger" collections (thanks to what I assume will be the use of Apple's CoreData), smart shelves, a much updated and "snazzier, snappier" UI to align itself with Apple's iApps, lots of tiny updates to sprinkle joy in various places, as well as a couple of features he's keeping up his sleeve. As far as when DL2 ships, Wil gets somewhat suspicious with his answer: "Our aim is to ship the day Leopard ships, as we will be Leopard-only. We don't actually know when that is, which adds an extra element of excitement to this release." Hmm... he know DL2 will be Leopard-only, but he doesn't know when the Big Cat ships? I admittedly don't have much more to go on here, but something about that seems fishy. Apple's statement on Leopard, as far as we know, is still 'Spring 2007,' so we'll just have to see what happens at Macworld in January.

if DL doesn't find your album at amazon, which is more often than not the case, you can change the 'format' to something such as 'vinyl,' 'EP' or 'LP' and it will change the size of the icon to a 12" sleeve. the only bummer is that if you have 7", 10" or some other size, they still only show up as 12".
i had an email conversation maybe nine months ago with a developer, who said he'd present my suggestions to have different size icons and see if they might be able to work them in. we both admitted that the audience for this functionality was limited, but i have my fingers crossed for the new release.
I think DL is pretty nice, I can't figure out why it gets so much hate. I like Dvdpedia too, they both have strengths. This just seems like another "we hate flashy GUI's" attack. What is wrong with flashy GUIs? It makes things look cooler?

December 14 2006 at 9:31 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOooh, mysql. That's got my attention. Now, for the win, will I be able to keep various album- and track-level metadata, such as composer, duration and notes?
One of my biggest complaints about DL (apart from its sluggishness) is the lack of detail in the data it stores. I like lots of useful data, and don't really give a flying flip about useless crap like how much my CD is currently selling for on Amazon.
And why DOES DL only get data from Amazon? What's wrong with the CDDB and FreeDB? I've been scratching my head over that one for some time.
I'll pay the price for a whole new license if the new DL 2.0 works the way I hope it will.
i doubt they're using a mysql database. most likely the sqlite, the same way safari stores the rss feed information.
*puts on marketer hat* i've been working on what could be described as "delicious library online": http://lib.rario.us
i also have a delicious library import option if you're using that, and the site also has rss feeds of your collection, and an csv excel export for backing up or using elsewhere... i hope some of you find some use for it. :)
"We don't actually know when that is, which adds an extra element of excitement to this release." lol he's really trying to hype it...

Nope, he said on the blog entry hes going to switch from xml to a full fledged mysql database. So, mysql is going to be the savior here, not CoreData.
it will be a paid update.
he says 2.0
often, sharewares editor changes the major number version (2.0 here) when they want to emphasize the Bold move toward new features and the need to pay for it.
Yes. I want to know if its a paid upgrade too... Im not a massive fan of paid upgrades unless it actually offers something which a massive massive step up from what went before.
Second, yes, Delicious Library supports Vinyls. I discovered this the other day. Just scan the Vinyl in, and if youre lucky, itll find it on Amazon.
