What really got changed in the iPod 1.2.1 update

Last night, we received a tip from an intrepid TUAW reader who pointed us to this page. He thought the page suggested that 1.2.1 update might be more involved than Apple originally stated.

According to Apple, the 1.2.1 video iPod update offered "bug fixes". So the TUAW geeks got to work. We copied the download.ipsw from the firmware into our top secret lab folder. We unzipped it. And then we compared the strings in the Firmware to the strings in the last Firmware release. And found...

Well, we found pretty much nothing. No smoking guns. No new hidden strings. The only changes between the two Firmware files seem to be...um...bug fixes.

Thanks bl8ant

"1.2.1 caused the problem from #8: the appearance that a song is playing, but no audio at all. I thought it was a hardware failure, so I returned my iPod in exchange for a fresh one. Same problem. Every day. Sometimes I get a different error where I press play but the song stays stuck on 0:00 indefinitely."

IT has to be HW related, I read all this yesterday and thinking it would be the firmware, I installed rock box. And I still have songs stuck on 0:00! I can't understand this. I'm going to the shop tomorrow, and shoving it into their face.

A restart solves both of these problems, but only temporarily. When is 1.2.2 coming out?

I installed the new 1.2.1 and it fixed a problem that started with the last update. Before the screen started to lock but the drive would still work and sync with 1.2.0. After 1.2.1 - todays update it has never had a problem. great fix!!!!! I restored reformatted and reloaded - all the files checked through diagnostic mode and nothing helped except this update. I Like IT!

My wife's iPod didn't output any sound after the update. It "played", but no sound out of either the headphone port or the dock.

I seriously doubt Apple could care less about iPodLinux or the 0.00001% of the iPod population that has shoehorned it onto their 'pods.

It's more likely to be an unfortunate side effect that they simply didn't bother to test against.

A header file tweak, and iPodLinux will be back in business.

Sadly, after I tried to update my 5g ipod (Itunes wouldn't let me, an error 48 appeared) It was working normally for 30 minutes, until I'd got a weird "plug to the power" icon for two hours without any chances to reset.

Then the ipod died. Then I discover it's 3 weeks off warranty, so nothing I can do but wait, drain the battery and try again.

It's a shame that apple is starting to feel almost as unreliable as microsoft.
