Zune riff on "I'm a Mac"
Here's what happens when the Zune takes on the iPod in a parody of those "I'm a Mac" commercials. I first stumbled across this on CNet, but it looks like Engadget has a post up about it as well. (Thanks Mike for finding that!)
The video does hit a truth or two about the iPod: the easily scratched surface and the minor difficulties about navigating to just the song you want. I love the iPod. You know I love the iPod. But yes, Apple would do well to steal a couple of the Zune navigation tricks. As for the wireless transfer? Whatever. I'm not so big on the wireless--although I was talking to Zune support yesterday and the guy said that the inside word was that wifi syncing and wireless song purchase from your flagged "inbox" might go live as early as January.

Ok, I have a Zune and absolutely love it... For all of you non-social freaks in the chat are only thinking 2 dimensional, hello "APPLE FREAKS" think out side the box for once like ya'lls infamous commercial says ya'll do but obviously you don't. The Zune is a way for friends to share songs amongst each other, the navigation trick is way better than iPod (and how do I know this? Hmmmm, maybe I own both and been matching them up personally!) The Zune navigation is totally sweet, you can browse the genre's while looking into one genre by pressing left or right i.e. ("id est" which is latin for "for example") you are in alternative despite what Jay had to say you do not have to go back out you simply (maybe it was to hard for him to understand since it is microsoft?) press left or press right (this isn't rocket science Jay.) Now lets talk about the customization of the background shall we, you can either have the album art display or you can have a wall paper up to you. Now lets talk about something that Apple didn't think about and which are getting sued by numerous amounts of iPod users, volume... The Zune will default to 10 out of 1-20, this is so that if you were going from transmitting to a FM transmitter in your car (20) to headphones you do not blow out your ear drums, therefor it defaults to 10 to preserve your hearing (hmmm, or is that rocket science again?) Sure the iPod can play games on it, if I wanted another gaming tool besides PSP, Xbox 360, 3 computers, or a cell phone I would go purchase a PS3 not a lamo 2d no definition peice of junk that I can't listen to music while playing a game. I'll just use my PSP for playing games and listen to my mp3's at the same time (innovation by Sony gotta love it). Now lets talk about the true spirit of competition shall we? Look at Microsoft first they were just Operating Systems, office software, gaming, then they went console gaming, now MP3 players, next car entertainment (FORD), they have just took on more front line business wars than any other company for any IT company at that(who has the brass balls now.) Heres a little questionaire for all you apple fans out there, how much market does Apple have in todays world? Less than 15%, Microsoft makes software for most cellular phones, a huge market in PDA's, a huge market in PC/Laptops, majority of mp3 players have some type of version of windows on it, most interactive devices the world has whether it is japanese, american, german, european, korean, etc... have some type of windows on it. GPS? O yes they have their hands on Garmin as well (always wondered why the military chose windows for laptops vs. linux/unix/apple for gps.) So did Microsoft truely steal anything from apple? Not really, if Apple was the leader I could see the reasoning behind Microsoft stealing other companies products and using it for them. Truthfully Apple was a great inventor of one truely remarkable product and that is iPod. But they truthfully should have done something a bit more smarter i.e. 40GB PDA's. Now that would be something truely remarkable, PDA's can play mp3's, videos, gps, remind you of calender events, emails (Blackberry), a flash card slot for sharing documents/mp3's/videos, along with so much more. So why would they only make it to play music? iPod is a complete flop in my book, with something they could have made possible billions of dollars and over took Microsofts hand on the market they failed to do so, and with the debute of Zune just proves that they (Microsoft) may use other companies ideas but they will have one more card up their sleeve to pull a royal flush when you think you won with a straight. Apple has been flopping so much lately that is one reason they decided to go with intel pentium processers, since they can't seem to get enough people to buy their software they will at least make hardware you can install Windows on. Now I am an IT professional, and I can safely say I have worked with Apple, Novell, Linux, Unix, and Microsoft, hell I even used OS's that are not on the market, hell I even used AT&T's version of unix back in high school. The one OS that stands out above them all is Windows, so much more easier, user friendly, and the cons the bugs and the annoyance of viruses. But lets put it this way, if Apple was the leader they would have the same exact issues as Microsoft. Hackers, virus writers, software crackers, all want to bring Microsoft down because Microsoft makes an average of millions of dollars a day. Bill Gates makes an average of thousands in an hour (Windows 95 gotta love it). But here is something you nut cases are blind to, did you know Steve Jobs is constantly asking Bill Gates for advice? Hmmmm, funny that non-biased pc mags will tell you whats going on in the world of technology. Steve Jobs asked Bill Gates how to improve OS X before it hit debute and Bill Gates shoveled over the advice and Steve Jobs implemented it into O

I've never seen such vapid Mac lovers.
If mac didnt have you "trendy" go-getters to sell their products too, they would have gone out of business years ago. Just goes to show you, as long as it looks cool or makes you look cool, It doesnt have to be able to do a damn thing.
Jay,
fron the scenario you described (from what i could make of it) you were at alternative and wanted to get to rock. you could have pressed right to change categories. the list of genres across the top are controlled by the left and right buttons.
up and down to scroll through the list and left and right to scroll through the categories. you use the same navigation throughout the pmc ui (portable media center btw).
e.g. if you're browsing some photos in one folder and you want to switch to another folder, you don't have to go back and choose the one you want, as you can hit left or right to get to the desired folder/item.
all your credit card information? are you kidding? my understanding with zune is that you have to purchase "points" in groups, and use those points to buy songs. so, that means, to buy one song you have to buy more credit worth of points than that one song costs. that means microsoft is sitting on your unused dollars making interest while you wait for another song to come along you want to buy. and even then, you should hope it comes to the same amount of points you bought. their commercial scheme clearly demonstrates they think consumers are retards. itunes, i buy one song, and i'm done. better yet, i use emusic.com, bloody amazing.

I don't quite understand your point since the grammar isn't all there. Nevertheless, I'll take a stab at responding to your comments. I don't think I actually implied that Apple was completely innovative - that would be a total fallacy.
In the long run innovation properly packaged and deployed does win: the Zune brings new technology to the table, but with poor execution. That is not innovation.
I don't know what "And it's because of said company that can easily just copy your innovative style that makes it not last." means. Please explain.
BS
The Zune can't share videos.
And it's harder to purchase a song when you're forced to buy MS points in $5 increments. Pfft! didn't even get the soundtrack right.
I like how they point out how the iPod user has to enter his credit card info to buy... like that's a bad or unique thing to iTMS. Heck, they even licensed 1-click from Amazon! at least now you can even browse without a CC#. Zune's marketplace won't let you do that.
Ah, the MS FUDMachine. takes all kinds.
Erica,
I am really intrigued by what you mean that Apple could learn from "a couple of the Zune navigation tricks". I tried a Zune out in the mall the other day and found it very counter intuitive.
For instance, the lists of genres that line up across the top are not accessible once one has reached the top of the list of "Alternative" and simply wants to move over to "Rock". You would think you could hit the "Up" button again. Instead, you have to hit back, which brings you back to the main menu, from which you select from genres again.
The click wheel is much easier.
Could you elaborate?
If anyone actually owned a Zune, then song syncing might be more useful. Even if it was included on iPods, I wouldn't use it much.
