Mac OS X hacked to run on UMPC, tablet fans rejoice

For those who don't obsessively refresh Engadget, UMPC stands for 'Ultra-Mobile PC' - an emerging hardware form factor for a device smaller and more mobile than a notebook, but nowhere near pocketable (by any stretch of the imagination) like a PDA or iPod. For now it's definitely a niche device (most don't even have built-in keyboards), but that didn't stop Engadget from finding 'Igor', who managed to get a hacked version of Mac OS X 10.4.7 installed on an Asus R2H UMPC. Play the video above for a demo of this home-grown Mac OS X tablet, complete with Safari, iChat and iTunes action, with support for the Apple Remote to boot.
Come on Apple! If DIYers can whip this together at home, where's my Mac OS X Tablet mini?
Update:Removed incorrect video. Thanks to all who pointed that out.

I am tablet fan.
Good news :)
I'm all for mac modding but this is just silly, I'd feel really stupid sitting on a train with that white block in front of me, why not just buy a windows/linux whatever based UMPC & install X86 OSX on it.

December 15 2006 at 4:34 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell, other comments have already said it, but that's not an Asus, that's Peter Green's modded Mac MKIII. I interviewed him about it recently:

I was referring to the poster who posted the home brew mini video without really mentioning it and seemingly implying it was the Asus box and generally creating a horrid piece of writing.
Honestly, this place needs editors, not just bloggers.
Here's a link to a page with the actual video of Mac OS X running on the Asus tablet. Good follow-through, TUAW!

I agree with starno, it's just a Mac Mini crammed in a case with a little screen and a battery. And yes, James, I did watch the video. At 25 seconds in, you can see the back of it, and there are all the Mini's ports. Congrats to Peter Green for making it, it is neat, but it's not a "hacked version of Mac OS X 10.4.7 installed on an Asus R2H UMPC."

December 15 2006 at 3:46 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyso he had to buy a mini and a windows UMPC? I hope he's running parallels to at least give him the feeling that he hasn't spent too much... :)
