Video: David Pogue proves Vista doesn't copy OS X
In the short NYT video which goes along with his print review of Redmond's newest OS, the always amusing David Pogue takes it upon himself to debunk that the old saw that Microsoft just copies Apple. For instance, David points out that unlike Spotlight, which is located at the top right of the desktop, Vista's equivalent search feature is located at the bottom left. Certainly worth a chuckle at Microsoft's expense.[Edit: Sorry about problems with the link. It should be fixed now.]

yeah ofcourse apple also had it in mind long before making it public. however, that's not really of importance, since i was adressing the "ms copied apple" claim.
Wow, does nobody know that David Pogue has been a Mac fan/guru for MANY years now? Of course he's being sarcastic.

1. John Hodgman's intro at the WWDC... "Mac developers, take some time off and work on your tans, or help us with Vista, we sure could use some. And by the way, Widgets, Gadgets, totally not the same thing."
2. Bertrand Serlet's WWDC presentation: "they literally took the Windows logo and put an Aqua button over it!"
and,
3. Steve Colbert's deadpan satire.
Props to the Pogue!
For me, the funniest thing was that I didn't even know Mac OS X had that 3D chess program that you could move the board around change the textures for!
I thought the entire thing was a stitch esp. at the end when he made the X with his fingers. Gosh I didn't even realize that MS copied the chess game too... how lame. I'll still be using it at work though coz I have to :-(

And BeOS had features vastly superior to Spotlight and Microsoft's version of it since the mid-90s.
Exactly, People think that just because Apple doesn't say anything that they DIDN'T have it in mind.
Just like, prior to the release of the Mac Pro, A PC user friend of mine was talking about how Apple would NEVER come out with a machine like the Mac Pro, because he hadn't HEARD anything about it for his 'contacts in Apple'. I told him to wait until the new Xeon chips were released. Two weeks later, I had FULL gloating rights!
kekekekekeke
Fact is, it takes YEARS to develop something like Spotlight to the level that Apple has implemented it.
Just because M$ announced a technology a long time ago that they failed to implement until Vista, doesn't mean that Apply hadn't already thought of it. If you haven't noticed Apple doesn't talk anything they're doing.

Yes bryan - sometimes sarcasm is lost in the mists of earnestness :-)
microsoft started to speak about its technologoy, the so called "spotlight copy", long before apple even announced spotlight.
