Time Magazine covers Mac of the Year
The annual Time magazine "Person of the Year" issue is on newsstands this week, and a cursory glance at the cover reveals... well, an iMac that's displaying an extremely full-screen YouTube UI. While Apple products are not featured in the POY stories (although there is a well-done profile of YouTube founders Chad and Steve), the cover picture demonstrates once again that when designers want to say "technology" with style, they choose Apple. For other Time covers featuring Macs and iPods, check out the Time Cover Search. Don't miss this vintage Steve Jobs cover... dig the 'stache.
Thanks Mike and Robert!

From the picture that doesn't really look like an iMac. Looks more like a white LCD with a white keyboard.... If that were an iMac it is lacking the 4" white border at the bottom with the apple logo. I am pretty sure that is just a generic (non existent) slightly apple themed computer. JMO

Although I'm sure linking to one's own site in here is probably bad form of some sort, I can't resist pointing out that I predicted "You" for Tim's POY cover -- and even mocked up an eerily similar cover concept -- back in early October.

Aha -- apparently worse form than I thought. Well, you can click through on my name in this post, if you care.

That is a Mac.. It's just that they put the YouTube over the Apple Logo/screen border

Oh, he did say it was an iMac. What an idiot.
If you don't even know what an iMac is, you shouldn't be blogging here.

People, people, people.
First, to Derek, thanks for your strict adherence to our unofficial site rule, "If you don't have anything nice to say, c'mon over to TUAW and spend your Sunday with us." :-)
Second, let me clarify the post. What TIME did was this: they took a picture of an iMac -- clearly identifiable by the distinctive support foot -- and then they inserted a picture of a YouTube window, appearing "mirrored", over the entire front of the iMac image, obscuring the screen and side bezel. This process, known as "photocomposition," is frequently done using an obscure software package called "Photoshop," which I imagine nobody here has ever heard of. :-)
Likewise, the keyboard is an Apple keyboard.
The point of the post is not that the cover is a literal image of an iMac -- rather that TIME used the iMac as the base for an illustration, which shows how completely the Mac aesthetic has come to mean "computer" for print design.

I suppose it's possible that it's a cinema display, but looks like an iMac to me.

It would be cool if they actually made the mirror part in print so when you hold up the magazine you see yourself in the Youtube "video".

What century do the TIME graphic artists live in? There's no mouse in that photo. I know it would screw up the symmetry, but come on--it's 2006! It's impossible to operate a mainstream computer, Windows or Mac, without a mouse.

So where do I find one of those mysterious Apple displays without a bezel?
