Software Update: Apple Security Update 2006-008
For your downloading pleasure, Apple presents Security Update 2006-008 (PPC and UB). Both weigh in at under 2MB and require Mac OS X 10.4.8 (client or server). You can grab this patch from Apple's downloads page or from Software Update.According to Apple, this patch "improves the security of Quartz Composer and QuickTime for Java." Specifically, it patches a vulnerability that may lead to "information disclosure" when visiting a malicious website (aka phishing site). Complete details on the flaw can be found in Apple's Kbase.
Mike and I were curious about why there's both a PPC and a UB version. Seems redundant since UB means it works on both PPC and Intel. Turns out it's not truly "universal." As Mike noticed first, the System Requirements state that it's Universal for 10.4.8 Server, but 10.48 Client is Intel-only. Hence the standalone PPC-only download (which can be used on client or server.) Would still be nice to streamline this a bit more.
Faithful guinea pigs, please report your experience with this update below!

After the restart, certain icons on my desktop were rendered blank, or in sheet-of-paper form, rather than the image they used to use (they were three torrents, to be precise). The change doesn't seem to affect their function.

This bug was discovered by MacSlash author Petard. He's done a write-up of exactly what the issue was, as well as a proof-of-concept available on the web. You can check it out here: http://macslash.org/article.pl?sid=06/12/19/1727246&mode=nested

All sorts of strange problems after running the 2006-008 security update, yet only affecting one my two MacMini 1.66 GHz 2 GB 667 MHz running (German) OS X 10.4.8:
System Preferences completely "shot", with the Date&Time item/icon looking very odd.
The little flag for language/keyboard setting and date/time did not show any more in the top menu bar -- basically _everything_ left side of the blue Spotlight magnifying glass icon was gone.
Also Safari much more prone to quit.
Managed to delete some prefs and cached stuff and to replace the System Preferences application with the working one from the other machine.
However: Currently I get _no_ sound whatsoever. When I check the option to have the little speaker symbol displayed in the menu bar it shows. But as soon as I click it once, it vanishes from the menu bar.
In the Sound window, I have Volume set to full, yet everything is greyed out, "Sound off" is checked without my doing, while "Display sound volume in the menu bar" unchecks itself everytime(!)
And, very oddly: While resetting PRAM and the fsck-routine working ok (no problems found) and disk utility claiming to have repaired some permissions, I can not run a reset of Open Firmware/nvram with the O-F-Apple-Alt key combination using an original Apple USB Keyboard.

FYI:
Re-applying the Mac OS X 10.4.8 combo updater -- as suggested in www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20061229012312895 / Friday, December 29 2006 @ 01:23 AM PST / Security Update 2006-008 Special Report: General fixes for common issues -- did overwrite the problem-causing files :))
