Live Streaming MWSF Keynote?

In years past, Apple streamed the Macworld San Francisco Keynote (aka Stevenote) live for your delectation. Unfortunately, they seemed to have suspended the practice. Well what's a Mac news junkie to do? Of course you'll be able to count on TUAW and others for live text feeds of the event, but World of Apple Live is promising their own grassroots broadcast via an advertising-supported Flash player.

According to the site, they "will be [in] attendance at the Keynote with a laptop that has a flash encoder which captures sound and uploads it to a streaming server which then delivers it to a client-side player at your computer, delivering you with audio live from the Keynote." However, since they don't have guaranteed bandwidth (I'm guessing they'll be using a "Wireless Broadband" card on one of the cell networks), they can't guarantee success. As some commenters have pointed out, this is of questionable legality (and Apple is certainly not known for being reticent with the lawyers), but if they can pull it off it'll be worth checking out on Jan 9th.

I am sure you will be able to see the broadcast, it just won't be a live broadcast (which I am sure you already know). While it won't be as dramatic watching it later, it is less taxing on servers not to have to host 100k+ simultaneous streams.

I can't wait for the event as well, but will not be able to make it. I'm wondering why though, with all of the new hardware being very multimedia friendly, Apple isn't proactive in video streaming the event. It would seem a great opportunity to demonstrate QT, the new iChat, etc to the masses.

Camcorder with FireWire output + MacBook Pro + EVDO card + QuickTime Streaming Server would be my choice.

However, I doubt it is in fact legal, and security is going to be high at this event because of the hype.

I just read the Engadget live blog, if nothing else for the snarky comments!

Too convoluted. They are using:
* a laptop with a Flash encoder
* a cellphone TCP-IP link

When they could use a plain cellphone call to stream audio to the server, which can receive it via Plain-old-telephone-service.

I just can't wait for Jan 9th. It's got to have some crazy releases. I mean, the laptops, desktops and pro machines have just been updated (maybe an 8 core mac pro, but nothing more). I hope there's a new release of leopard...
