How many iPods is too many?

You may think it's strange that I own eight iPods, but this MSNBC story tells me I'm not alone in thinking that there's no such thing as "too many iPods."
As the story points out, different iPods are better suited for different purposes - much like shoes.
My iPod (video) is more useful to me as a portable, digital photo album and video device, as well as for backup of my whole iTunes library, but less useful for every day music listening since it's bulkier than my iPod nano. While my iPod shuffle is better suited for the gym and my iPod photo is best for road trips since most of my car accessories work with it. What do I do with the rest of my iPods? I received my Crystalmini as a gift, and it only leaves the house for special occasions. My original 5GB iPod has a 20hr battery in it, but the scrollwheel is a bit wonky so it doesn't get much use. My 20GB 3rd Gen iPod never brought me much joy and it now used mostly as a portable hard drive. My other iPod shuffle is now on permanent loan to hubby. And honestly, other iPods come and go all the time. When a new iPod comes out, I buy it and try it out and yes - even take it apart. I have to. It's my job to know what's inside so I can better support them when my clients buy them.
But enough about my own iPod menagerie... as iPods become more and more ubiquitous, I bet many of you have more than one and probably have even more of them in your future. So tell me, how many iPods do you currently have, and what are you using them for?

not enough spare cash to buy anything else. if anyone looking to donate an ipod to a poor student, pls remember me.
I've got a 1st gen 2GB white nano. I only got it coz I was getting a MacBook for uni and when the student rebate deal was on it worked out at about £18.

I didn't really need it (who does?) but reeeally wanted it, so I had it engraved with "Deserve's got nothing to do with it", a quote from my favourite movie. Nowadays I mainly use it in the car, in combination with Griffin's iTrip transmitter.
A year or so later I couldn't resist a shiny black Nano, which only stores Jazz and Bebop music.
I have my eye on a new shuffle, it's cute if completely superflous, and I'd love to have a big 80 GB iPod. Wouldn't know what to do with either, though - I hate shutting the world out and using headphones, *lol*.
I have two:
a) iPod Mini Blue. : Use it in my car (with iTrip).
b) 5g iPOd Voideo 30 GB : Generally watch videos and music at home.
- Black 80GB iPod, 5th Gen
- Black 8GB Nano, 2nd Gen
- 1GB Shuffle, 2nd Gen
- 512MB Shuffle, 1st Gen
- 40GB iPod Photo, 4th Gen
I have two, 30gb Video and 1st gen 2gb Nano love me video... use it daily... Nano I gave to me best friend as a 'it mine but you have it' xmas gift.
December 28 2006 at 9:34 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMy approach is to mate each of my hard drives to its own custom install of the latest Mac OS and its own iPod. The TiBook G4/667 DVI had a 3G 15GB iPod that just had the HD go bye-bye and so inherited a 2G 4MB green iPod mini. The PM G5 Dual 2Ghz has 2 HDs, home to a white 5G and a black 5.5G ViPod. The MacBook Pro 2Ghz is mated to a 2G silver 2GB Nano. A new Shuffle for my work iMac is due next! Is there ever too much of a good thing?
December 28 2006 at 8:33 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyCurrently I have 3 iPods and my sister has the 512MB shuffle.
These are the iPod I have or sold:
1. iPod (10GB, touchwheel)
2. iPod shuffle (512Mb) *sold
3. iPod mini (6GB, free with iBook) *sold
4. iPod mini (4GB) *sold
5. iPod nano (4GB) *sold
6. iPod 5G (60GB) *sold
7. iPod 5.5G (30GB)
8. iPod nano RED 2G (4GB)
And friends called me nuts.
While technically they aren't all "mine", my household currently has 10 iPods:
1) "The Museum Piece" - Original 1G 5 GB iPod I recieved as a joint gift from my wife and my mom in Jan 2002. I just replaced the battery in it and it is fully functional, polished like new and being displayed in my entertainment unit in my family Room
2) "The Never Been Heard iPod" - 3G 15 GB iPod that was my older daughter's 1st iPod. HD died on it about 18 months after she got it. Recently replace both the HD (now 20 GB) and battery to restore it to it's fully functional state and I now load it with all of the songs in my library that have a play count = 0. Hence the name.
3) "The Never Been Opened iPod" - 3G 15 GB iPod still in plastic in it's orignal packaging. My mom got this as gift from her boss. She didn't know what to do with it and gave it to me. Seems a shame to open it now.
4) "BluPod" Original 1G 4 GB iPod mini (blue) - Valentine's gift for my wife, engraved with "Love you, P." Still works, seldom used.
5) "KikiPod" 2G iPod 4 GB mini (green) - My younger daughter 1st iPod. Gave it to her as an end of the year "proud of you" gift. She worked her butt off in school and on her swim team and was dying for her own iPod. We rewarded her. It reads: "To our girl. We are so proud of you. Love Mom and Dad."
6) "PodManda" 4G 20 GB iPod photo - My daughters current full sized iPod. She killed the HD in this one too at about the 16 month mark. Replaced it for $100. Note to parents: HD players are not recommend for teenagers or pre-teens. I would never buy anybody under the age of 30 an iPod with an HD.
7) "PhillyPod 3.0" 4G 60 GB iPod photo - My current everyday iPod. Loaded with all 8109 songs I own, 1517 photos, about 2.3 GB worth of data/documents, all my contacts, and all my calendars. This is my workhorse iPod and I am lost without it. It's technically my 3rd iPod hence the 3.0 designation. I also had a 3G 30 GB previously but sold it to get this one.
8) "SoccerPod" 5G 30 GB iPod video - My wife's current everyday iPod. Aside from the music capabilities, we absolutely love the video capabilities. Although we mostly use it watch stuff on our TV through a Universal iPod dock hooked to our TV and our home stereo. Just last night we watched an entire documentary downloaded from YouTube (the documentary is a BBC special not available in the US) from this iPod on our TV. The video quality was "good enough" for us to really enjoy a program that was otherwise unavailable to us. Took a total of ~30 minutes to get the video downloaded, converted and onto the iPod.
9) "NanoPod" 2G 8 GB iPod nano - My younger daughters current everyday iPod. It's all she wanted for her Birthday..and it's all she got.
10) "The new member of the family" 2G 1GB iPod shuffle. A Christmas present for my older daughter. Awesome little machine. So small; so convenient. She is using this as her work-out iPod. At $79 how could you go wrong.
I definitely subscribe to the theory that you can never have "too many iPods". iPods that I will have:
iPod mobile - Since Apple obviously can't call it the iPhone this is what I think it will be called. And I will have it hopefully in about 2 weeks. The only thing my iPod is currently lacking is the ability to make phone calls or it would be the only electronic device I'd carry.
6G iPod video - The "true" iPod video that I've been waiting for. Widescreen, touchscreen interface that whole shebang.
iPod implant - probably a couple of decades off from this. A nanochip implanted directly into your brain that has a thought controlled neuro interface that contains the entire history of recorded music in uncompressed lossless format. Resistance is FUTILE!! ;-)
