Beta Beat: Parallels Desktop for Mac Update Beta3 (Build 3106)
The coding elves at Parallels must not sleep. They have released just another beta of Parallels Desktop for Mac (this is Beta 3 for those keeping score at home). In case you haven't used the previous Beta, there is a new UI for Parallels, which I am not too crazy about, and a number of bug fixes as well as support for USB 2.0.New in this beta is the inclusion of Transporter Beta3. What does Transporter do? It allows you to migrate an existing Windows install on a PC to a Parallels install over a network. It will also convert VMWare and Virtual PC disk images to Parallel Disk images.

When, oh WHEN will I be able to migrate a Linux or OSX box to a virtual machine over the network? Everyone (ie: Parallels and VMWare) seem to think I'd only ever move Windows to a VM. Why is that?
January 06 2007 at 9:46 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've been using Parallels Desktop for the Mac since it first came out and I've been very pleased with the way this app has grown since then. Lately though I 've been getting the impression that the folks at Parallels are using more time on GUI tweaks (like animation) then on the actuall purpose of the app itself.
For instance, the Parallels icon in the title bar. Why is it there? It wasn't there before, and no other Apple app has an icon in the title bar, so why put it there?
Then the icon in the dock. Fortunately the previous build allowed me to turn off the ability to show the desktop in the icon. Why would anyone want to use that? As if you could actually distinguish the indivial windows in that view. The only thing it does is eat valuabe resources which are better used speeding up the os that is running (no complaints in that area though!).
Just my 5 cents :-)
Now, if they can manage interleaving of windows, and 3D video acceleration...

FYI all, there is a Parallels 'video testimonial' contest open now:

QUESTION:
Can I use Transporter to copy a Windows installation that is located locally on an additional HDD. BTW, this is an OSX86 setup and uses BIOS, not BootCamp and EFI.
If they at least learn that on Macs they should put the freakin' OK, Save, Continue, etc. on the right and Cancel, Back, Stop, Halten Sie on the left, I'll be so much happier.
But, that's really some of the only things that annoy me about Parallels are the Windows UI elements in the Mac portion of the app. Otherwise, it's been a godsend for my workflow and has worked like a champ since I installed it several months ago.
Cheers,
FL
