Costco uses Zune stand to hold iPods

If you could sum up 2006's Zune/iPod meme in one picture, it might be something like this one; MacDailyNews reader Larry Fransson snapped it on 12/29 at a Costco warehouse near Seattle, Washington. If you can't use the Zune display base for actually, y'know, selling Zunes, might as well hold up the iPods.
"Welcome to the social. Now, get down on the floor and raise me up where the nice shoppers can see me. Who's your daddy?"

I was in the Issaquah Costco (HQ outside of Seattle) on 31 Dec 2006 and the display was empty. Either Costco got the message from some Redmond employee, or they had no Zune to sell. Either way - odd that a retailer that is always moving product would have prime display space not used. The iPod & iTunes gift card display is still front and center and stocked. PS - The electronics staff bad mouths iTunes @ Costco when I have talked to them.

I hope we are all reading this right. Could it be that Costco sold out of all the zunes but has a supply of iPods that isn't moving? As an unapologetic Apple fanboy, I hope not.

my local walmarts all sold out of iPods a week before Christmas but hadn't sold more than a handful of zunes, so they decided to up them in the iPod display... they're lucky some Apple rep didn't see that junk

Two funny things I noticed this holiday season in regards to iPods vs Zunes- Costco had a very prominent iPod display, with each different model in every color hooked up to a dock and speaker set. They had an entire end cap dedicated to this. The Zune, on the other hand, was security cabled to the leg of a shelf, sitting there, out of batteries and connected to nothing.
I was doing some last minute shopping on Christmas Eve, and was at a Target where a woman asked the kid restocking the iPod accessories if they had any iPods left. The guy replied something to the effect of, "No, of course not..." He continued, "We have about 50 Zunes though."
The woman responds, "Why would I want one of those?"

As a follow up on Issaquah Costco. The iPods are given up front presentation, and there has always been supply on hand of nanos since 2 gen. came out when I have stopped by. At one point recently there was a much smaller supply of Zune - but none today for what ever reason.

If it is anything like the 2 Costcos I've been to, they've been sold out (they had them on sale for $219). Not sure if they aren't planning on getting more or not. I don't understand fanboy-ism. I have a lot of iPods, but I really like the Zune's interface/UI. Apple needs to take a lesson from it. Hopefully the new "real" video iPods come out this month (Jan).

I was at a Costco in Anchorage a week before Christmas where the Zune and iPod displays themselves were pretty much the same, but there were many many iPod accessories and only one ore two Zune accessories. The actual iPod display was completely surrounded by people whereas the zune display only had one person who was saying, "I don't know what this is, but it looks dumb." That made me laugh.

this is similar to display i saw at the cosco i go to.
but i don't believe the zunes were sold out...infact...there were about 50 of them...on the ground next to the zune display that the ipods proudly sat on.
