Rig of the Year (So Far)

Digg today brings us our first TUAW rig of the day/week/month/year. Owned by flickr user washington_dc_photographer, this workstation sports three 30 inch Apple Cinema displays, 1 G5 Quad, 1 G5 Dual, 1 15 inch PowerBook, 6TB of external storage, 6 CF card readers, and a 15 inch Sony wireless TV. I can only imagine the kind of money that he must have spent on this setup, but I certainly see why this would be needed for a full time professional photographer shooting large RAW files and running Aperture.

In any case, this setup certainly sets a high bar for future 2007 rigs, so don't forget to submit yours to the TUAW flickr pool.

Wow. I'm jealous. But I do not have any negative feelings against Mr. Harrington whatsoever. Although I would like to redecorate his work area.

Cool setup.

As for the bizarre comments, not every photographer runs around taking amazing photos of wildlife and whatnot. Suggesting that his work "sucks" is about as mature as telling someone that their favourite band "sucks".

He's obviously good enough to afford a pretty cool Mac setup. My 15" PB on a dining table flanked by my two tabby 2 year old cats pales in comparison...

very cool setup! I was surprised he is a photographer, I thought this is a trading desk or similar...

It seems some people are upset he has more money than them.

"Come, grab the posse and the crowbars - his office address is posted on his website"

Is there really any need for that?

It's funny how "jerk-like" people get with people that may or may not be better than them. So what if he wasted money of something he might use a lot? It's not your money now is it?

I think some of his work is pretty impressive, not the best I've seen, but still good enough to make it as a photographer. Most likely more talented than any of the people who commented on this post.

Wow, if he can afford that kind of gear, via his "photography that sucks", imagine if he was even a good photographer!

Here I am, using a used 450 Mhz G3 B&W Mac, a monitor I snatched off the curb before the trash pickup and a keyboard I got at Goodwill for two bucks.

And yet, I harbor no ill will whatsoever towards Mr. Harrington.

Truly, are there no limits to my deviant excesses?

What, are we all to kiss-up to this undeservedly successful troll? Honestly - this is the most excessive display of consumerism I've seen on TUAW. Let's grovel at John Harrington's feet, for he has proven that even the most untalented can become successful.

What's with all the negative comments?

I like the matrix screensavers; goes well with that set up.

wow, what an excess of prosumer equipment. i wonder if he had any money left for, you know, a camera. my bet is his actual workflow is a disposable camera and the print kiosk at walmart.

p.s. his photography sucks http://www.johnharrington.com
