CardRaider: Undelete for Memory Cards
If you've ever accidentally deleted digital photos from a memory card before downloading them you'll probably be interested in CardRaider from ecamm. Just mount the card on your Mac with an external card reader (or even in the camera itself if it is a USB mass storage device), and CardRaider may be able to find and recover the images and even send them to iPhoto. Keep in mind that this only works because the memory locations of the files are not immediately written over when you delete a photo on your camera, so it probably won't work if you have refilled the card with more photos (or reformatted the card). Nonetheless, I can image this little utility could be a life-saver if you accidentally hit the delete key too quickly when scanning through snapshots on your camera.CardRaider is $19.95 and a demo is available.

I like Boomerang Data Recovery Software, http://www.boomdrs.com/ but it costs money as well. It does the job though. I already own it, so I guess it's free when I need it now.. hah.

It's been so useful that I've donated to the developer.
Lexar Image rescue is another freebie that works.

I've had it twice now where iPhoto makes the whole system inoperable, endresult bing that the card doesn't mount / show anymore in OS X (unreadable file system).
So far the only thing I've been able to do is attach it to a windows machine and do a recovery there.
Exactly was I was looking for!
Was close to buing it before i read the comments.. had no thought of searching for other recovering programs. Tested the three ones named here and i found PhotoRec most useful, recovered some more pictures than the others..

Works awesome for me, even recovered photots up to two months old on the camera AFTER it had been "formatted" and reused several times.
Price: Free!
Or you can use the free PhotoRec: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec if you're stingy with the green.
