Gmail+Growl 2.0

When the Gmail Notifier emerged from its cocoon last August as the Google Notifier, the utility bizarrely introduced its own popup alerts for new messages instead of simply using Growl, which is arguably the standard in Mac OS X notification systems.

I don't know how we missed it, but Gmail+Growl stayed right in stride and released a 2.0 version to work with the new Google Notifier (in which case, shouldn't this be called Google+Growl?).

As long as you shut off the built-in alert system in Google Notifier, Gmail+Growl works well with the new utility. The one quirk I've found so far is that it doesn't seem to be pulling images from Address Book, and I don't know if this is a problem on my end or an update is in order. Either way, if you prefer Growl for all your system notification needs, Gmail+Growl should fit the bill just fine.

I think he's saying that a great number of popular apps for OS X at least have the capability to use Growl's system-wide notifications. It's not a standard, but it probably ought to be. Plus, Google Notifier lacks any options for its notifications, which IMHO stay on the screen for an annoyingly long time, needlessly diverting my attention from whatever I'm doing.

If only Google Notifier would check for new mail under the labels like GmailStatus. I got some skip inbox rules to handle mailing lists etc.

btw, does anybody pay attention to the fact, that Google Notifier still does not use SSL when connecting to Gmail / gCal?

I think Growl is great, but why would it be "bizarre" for Gmail to make their own notification rather than employ one that only a tiny minority of Mac users use? Presumably they didn't want to say to people, "Please install this notifier for your menu bar and then install another notifier for pop-ups." Though I'd rather use Growl myself, Google's decision seems reasonable, not "bizarre."

the reason for it is to let peeps like myself know when there's new mail, when we don't want to use anything except gmail's web interface. i don't really understand *not* needing it :)

"bizarrely?" Why should Google use a program that's not part of the OS to display messages? I agree Growl is nice, but I wouldn't treat it like it's the defacto standard.

I manage my gmail through mail.app and growl picks that up fine, address book images and all. I never really understood the need for google notifier. Now if they can get ical and google calendar to sync up, that'd be something.
