Ask TUAW: Call for Questions
Attention TUAW readers! This week we'll be starting a a Questions and Answers help column as a weekly feature. But of course to do this well we need some good questions. We'll take questions from anyone, but we hope to be especially useful for all the switchers and other new Mac users out there. Please submit your question via the comments page (put Ask TUAW in the subject), or just by leaving a comment to this post. Each week we'll choose several questions of general interest to answer in the column. Although we will try to be as helpful as possible, we may not be able to answer all questions. And naturally we invite our other readers to pitch in with suggestions as well. So get to asking!

Is the discoloration still an issue with the white macbook or is it safe to go out and buy one without any fear of yellow stains?

Hey there TUAW,
I'd like to know something about the bar at the top (what do you call that, anyways?) The application name, which is in bold, next to the apple button can apparently be changed to the application icon (16 x 16 px). I've seen this in a few screenshots. I don't know if this is a setting or not, but how can I also do this? Thanks if you can help.

You can change the application name to an icon using FruitMenu, an unsanity product. Page: http://www.unsanity.com/haxies/fruitmenu

Whitney,
My brother-in-law is an IT Manager for a big advertising company in Austin, TX called GSD&M and all they use are Mac. So they are out there. Somewhere.

HOW do I get rid of the region code on the DVD-player in my MBP?
I just want to watch my DVD:s, some of them have different region code than the one we use here (region 2, Swe). It's really annoying, especially since I can watch them on any regular DVD player (all sold in Sweden are region free). Is there something to do, to make this silly region coding go away?

Is there a way (or a third party plugin) to change the actual file names of photos in iPhoto? I see that I can change the photo's title, but I want to be able to change the file name.

Each 30" segment in the iTunes music store has a URL. You can copy and paste this into a web page as a link. But is there any way of playing that 30" segment without iTunes being launched - in other words embed the segment in the web page?

Ask TUAW:
Hi, I have been preparing to make the full switch-over to Apple for a few months now. I am patiently waiting for the MacWorld Expo before I go out and purchase a Macbook Pro (In case Steve introduces something twice as good at the same price). My question is this: what is TUAW's favorite bluetooth mouse (and keyboard if you have a favorite) for the Mac OTHER than the mighty mouse. The mighty mouse's side buttons are difficult for me to press and I want something that conforms to my hand (I'm right-handed. Also, a dedicated right-click button would be nice. Thanks!
One last thing...Any recommendation for bluetooth headphones to listen to music around my room?

Two parter:
1. Any news on battery life in the MacBook Pros? Even with Bluetooth, etc. turned off, Energy Saver set to optimize battery life and next to nothing running, I’m still only pulling a hair over two hours most of the time.
2. Is there such a thing as a replacement battery for MBP that will extend use time? I see them advertised for older laptops, but not these.
Grazzi, oh wise ones...........

What is the best way too hook up a gaming console to my comp via composite cables. Is there any good usb device? Do I need a new monitor with composite inputs(my 17 inch studio monitor is kinda old anyway)? If so, what is a good monitor with DVI + composite inputs?

Magnus:
There is no way that I know of for unlocking the region codes on Mac hardware. At least I didn't found anything for my G4 iBook. The best workaround I've found is using VLC for watching movies, it ignores the region code on dvds. Besides, VLC is the best video player out there.

Daniel Wright:
There is an option on System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse called "Use F1-F12 keys to control software features". That will probably disable the F12 key for ejecting dvds, but you won't be able to use them to adjust brightness or sound volume.
As for the maximize thing, the best I option I know of is this little program called Stoplight. It makes maximize work like it does in Windows, but only on Cocoa based apps. Cocoa apps are the newest, specially designed for Mac apps. For example, Safari is Cocoa, FireFox isn't. Link to stoplight:

My question is:
Being a Mac user, I wanted to know when do you think Macs are going to start having viruses and spyware? Could it be when Macs start getting more popular and break the 10% computer market?

Julian maybe I am wrong but the eject key is not related to the function keys (f12) I have done searches on how to disable the eject key or at least make it where you have to hold it down to work, but I only found that on older mac's does your method work. I will play around with it again and see what I find
Ill check out stoplight
Thanks

How do you get mac's Internet Connect to stop nagging every half an hour that you are still connected to the internet and to click to stay connected, otherwise it waits a while and disconnects. I went to my mother's for Christmas and wanted to run software update on her iBook, and it needed quite a bit, 153 Megabytes of updates which it said would take 7-9 hours to download, and every half an hour that dialog came up. I wanted to just leave the computer connected and download throughout the night but this wasn't possible with that dialog coming up from internet connect. How do modem users do this?
Thanks.
