Apple drops Airport Express price to $99
Hot on the heels of announcing a new Airport Extreme base station Apple has dropped the price on the existing Airport Express to $99. This is a great deal for those of you interesting in streaming audio only from iTunes to your home theater, as well as folks that don't have an 802.11n ready Mac.I've had an Airport Express for well over a year now, and I am very happy with it though I might be soon phasing it out in favor of the Apple TV/Airport Extreme pairing (isn't it nice that you can stack on top of the other?).

I don't understand this part of your statement. My 802.11b iMac will connect to *any* Apple wireless router at 802.11b speeds, surely? So why buy the Airport Express?
I think the key is that you don't stream TO an aTV, unlike the APE - the aTV streams FROM whatever computer is your iTunes server. So the same thing is accomplished, but with a reverse interface.

The iTV looks a little... squished
Also, the apple tv is quite a bit bigger than the airport and mini. It is 7.7 x 7.7 inches. So your stack will look a bit stupid.
Maybe they are coming out with another device which will stack on top of those two and make it a pyramid.
Biggest disappointment of the apple tv is that
a) its maximum supported file resolution is 720p
b) it doesnt support native tv resolutions ( mine is 1366x768 )
One thing I can't figure out from anything I have seen/read/heard is whether you can stream to the iTV like you can an export express (from iTunes). If you can only do it from the iTV interface (pulling from the Mac), that would be very annoying and would keep the Airport express around for a long time.

January 09 2007 at 7:33 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell the Apple TV is about 3 times the price and not really the same - it can't share a printer can it, plus it seems rather overkill for sending music to your hifi...
