January 11 2007 at 3:53 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell first of all, six months from now there won't be a beter iPhone, there will just be an iPhone.
Second of all, it is perplexing that Apple would release a product without Gigabit ethernet, when they put it on their products.
But, many, many, MANY people connect wirelessly, regardless of whether they have a desktop or notebook. We have a room full of iMacs at work, and they all connect to an Airport, just because its easier.
Maybe Apple rushed to get the N out, and forewent the gigabit for now. I guess I'm not disagreeing with you, although I do plan to buy one...
I would not buy the iPhone right now simply because its first generation.
DON'T BUY FIRST GENERATION TECHNOLOGY! This is true everywhere. 6 Months to a year from now, there WILL be a newer and better iPhone out and it will have more features and you'll say to yourself, "I should have waited".
First gen technology is almost always gimped down in some form... they do this so you'll buy their product twice , usually.
I will not buy the new airport extreme because there is no gigabit ethernet. It looks amazing, but it's functionality is somewhat low. It could be much better and for the price it's being sold at, you could buy a different (and better, though not as good looking) one.
I'm not being a mac-hater here, so please don't accuse me of it. I'm just being pragmatic. I hate it when people go goo-goo, gaa-gaa over things without thinking the purchase through!!
$0. But my D-Link router skitzed out on me last night, as if it knew Apple released something that would melt it should the two be in close enough proximity.
To Tim Dorr (Comment No. 10), who writes, "Hell, maybe I'll even get a revision up to a hard drive-based one instead..."
I doubt by the time Apple upgrades the iPhone hard drives will be an issue. Companies are already coming out with 32- and 64GB flash-based memory. That's the future of the iPhone. the iPod can stay HDD-based and suck up the gigs to infinity, but solid-state memory is expanding immensly.
But you're right, by the time the rest of the world gets it, it will be like 30GB, just flash-based.
1 Apple TV and 1 Airport Extreme, my old airport extreme died on me so I waited for a new airport to be announced.
January 10 2007 at 2:50 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOrdered the Apple TV last night. Slightly puzzled as to how I'll hook it up to my TV however - I have a slightly older (although HD-capable) plasma which only has VGA and Scart/RGB inputs. Currently my XBox-360 hogs the VGA input. Can you get a simple component to Scart adapter cable?

Apple TV doesn't do as much as I was hoping.
The iPhone is too expensive for me right now, it's locked with Cingular, and I'm half way through a 2-yr contract with my current provider. I hate contracts on cell phones.
No point in getting the Airport Extreme; I have no devices which support the 802.11n and won't for a while. Plus, it doesn't have gb ports.
I would rather have an update to iWork at the moment.
Can someone explain to me the point of buying a movie from iTunes? I buy movies to enjoy with a group of people. In order to enjoy an iTunes movie with a group of people, you have to spend either 300 bucks for an iPod video and 15 bucks for a video cable or 300 bucks for an Apple TV. If you have a dvd, you can be pretty darn sure your friend owns a dvd player. You also get extras. Unless it one day becomes totally standard for everyone to have an Apple TV, which I doubt will EVER happen, owning one is stupid.
As for TV shows: You are already paying for a cable subscription. So now you are going to pay extra to see the same shows? What?? Now let's say you stop receiving cable so that iTunes becomes your full TV provider: then you can't do any free exploring or channel surfing for new shows. If you hear a certain show is funny, you have to pay 1.99 without knowing if you are going to like it.
It's all ridiculous!
HOWEVER, if Apple sets up a movie rental service, THEN you might have something. Because then iTunes acts as an on-demand service instead of a more expensive/limiting way of owning movies.
I ordered an appletv, but I just canceled the order. I've already got a Mac mini plugged into the TV, and while I'd planned to repurpose it when the iTV came out, I don't need to repurpose it enough to pay for the RAM it would need AND an appletv. Plus it's more versatile than the announced specs for the appletv. I'll wait until the next version comes along. Or at least some secret feature of the appletv they haven't announced yet.
