23 years ago we found out why 1984 wouldn't be like 1984
Many people call Apple's 1984 ad (this one is slightly updated), which introduced the Macintosh, as the best ad ever made. It aired 23 years ago today during Super Bowl XVIII. Head on over to Tony Long's piece for Wired to see why this iconic ad almost never saw the light of day.
Here's my question to you, loyal TUAW readers, how many of you actually saw this ad when it was aired (remember that the ad was only aired on TV twice, and only once nationally).

my wife is the sports nuts in the family, and I rarely watch the Superbowl, but did see some of the XVIII game and just happened to catch the ad. we did not have electricity from '71 to '80 when we moved west. I just got the 1984 -2004 iPod remake of the poster (still trying to get the original) and did find this link to the making of the ad >> it's at the bottom of http://www.curtsmedia.com/cine/1984.html
Theres no Ipod in the original it looks like it was added later on. Isn't apple supposed to have a commercial for this years superbowl? Maybe this is it, with the ipod???
I smell Rumours!!!
Oh, yeah - I remember seeing it, though it didn't really resonate with me as it took another 6 years before getting around to using a Mac.
Of course, watching the ad now, I can't help but note how it so accurately resembles Macworld now.
Its awesome reading some of the old schoolers stories...I was only 4 at the time of the AD and most of my Mac use during my life has been in school growing up.
That is until 3 years ago. Now I'm fully Mac addicted.
Anyways, I got lost in rant....I am enjoying the stories this article has induced.
And where was Bill Gates at the time ... The ad was targeting IBM. The PC, Personal Computer, was all there was for real work. That's why the ad was important - it predicted the release of IBM's hold on our abilities to use our 5 senses to express our world. Unfortunately, it also predicted cube farms.

I was in college at the time, and some of my friends were working on creating 3rd party apps for the new machine prior to its launch (as noted above, you had to use a Lisa to do the programming). We were one of the early campuses to get Macs; we spent a lot of time that spring term playing Dalleks and LodeRunner, marveling at MacPaint, and of course using all 6 or 7 or whatever it was available fonts in every MacWrite document we created. :-) Hard to imagine that there was a time when the entire operating system and the key productivity apps all fit on one 400K floppy disk.

Interesting how easy it was to retrofit an iPod into the commercial. Now if I could retrofit an intel chip into my G4 iMac without having to actually buy a new iMac.....
Hm, sure is funny to watch the old-school Mac lovers and the new-school "OMG iPod" observers in one place. As a personal fan of Apple lore, I was aware of both versions. I know the iPod version premiered at a Macworld a few years back, but forgot which. Thanks!
I was personally hoping Apple would do a similar commercial for Mac OS X, "See why 2001 won't be like '2001'," but alas.
I saw the ad during the 1984 Super Bowl and fit right into my "Up against the wall, ....." philosophy left over from the '60s (and still with me). Since 1979 when I persuaded the principal of my then (and still current) school that we needed to jump in on this (Apple) ASAP, it's always given me a warm, fuzzy feeling that Apple is cutting edge. And the number of students who have iPods and want iPhones is magical.
