Shopping for Vista
Ever go shopping for OS X? There's the standard version, the server, and the family pack. And that's more or less about it. Vista? Not so much. As loyal TUAW reader Tyler pointed out, you can get the Ultimate version, the Premium version, the Home Premium version, the Business version, the Home Basic version, Additional Licence packs, the 64-bit Business Ultimate version for System Builders, the 32-bit Business Ultimate version for System Builders, the 64-bit Home Ultimate version for System Builders, and...
I'm sorry. I just can't go on. It's too overwhelming. And it goes on for page after expensive page after page after page on Amazon. So what does this tell you about Vista? And about Microsoft? The words unfocused and inefficient immediately spring to mind. They're spending way too much time creating distinctions that don't actually have a functional difference in the way that people actually use their computers, and which in the end will harm their brand identity.

The point of the post is the simplicity of buying OS X. There's ONE version of OS X for desktop (i.e.: non-server) use; no need to look at a comparison chart to figure out the one best for you.
Microsoft provides a number of choices to the end-user. That's been the foundation of the PC since its inception: build to suit. Windows/PC users are accustomed to this even if it defies logic to Mac users.
It's funny to see comments that some readers are disgusted with TUAW bashing Windows. As if the Mac hasn't suffered the same by PC users for years.
Not a great post. If you're not bowing down to Jobs and showing pictures of his 7th grade homework you're ripping up Microsoft.
If this is "The Unofficial Apple Weblog" then why are you posting about Microsoft? Why would an Apple user care about Microsoft? Maybe it's market share envy. It's old, you need to find new material. When you post about Microsoft you're only telling the world "There's nothing exciting about the Apple today, so here's what's wrong with that other guy."
And just in case you haven't heard: Microsoft Vista isn't competing with Apple for OS market share. They're competing with themselves:
XP: 85%
Win2000/98/ME/NT: 8.5%
Mac OS: 5.7%
I went Mac and I am never going back.
I enjoy shots at MS. I've used windows for years because I didn't know any better. These articles make me question what I was ever thinking.
I like these articles including the Zune ones.
Nik, its not some posts that I like and some that I don't - its the majority of posts by one poster. Everytime something badly written, under researched or pointless (often all three) appears on this blog, it seems to be from ES.
I caught this one in Google Reader and the preview had cut the title and half the screenshot off. I read the text and before I'd finished had already guessed who the author was - and not for any positive reason. That's not good.
Steve H's comment (#8) about the arstechnica job spec was very pertinent here.
Shame no one at TUAW actually gives a sh!t about readers opinions of their content. Its usually branded flaming on the rare occasion that its referred to at all - actually guys, this is called feedback.
What on earth is with you people? It's not ok to have a light-hearted rip on Microsoft, but it's ok to attack someone who posts one?
It takes 15 seconds to read the intro to a Tuaw post. If you don't like it, don't read on. If you don't want to read Tuaw again - then don't. We don't want to hear you whine about how you'll never read it again. Just go away.
DO you complain when you don't agree with an article or opinion in a newspaper? Why not? I mean, you've paid for it?
Tuaw is accessible for free - you like some posts and you don't like others. That's life. Get over yourselves already.
Back on topic - assuming that software will continue to run on XP, I can't see myself upgrading for a long time. Can't be bothered with the hassle of trying to figure out which version of Vista will cripple my PC the least...
I'll just stick to my mac. Windows isn't worth all that money.

Erica is eyeing up a copy to run on her new Acer Ferrari for when she starts at the relaunched TUMW Ultimate Schumacher Edition.
I'll get my coat.
This isn't rocket science. Everybody with at least an ounce of Grey matter will follow step 1 and load newegg. Step 2 is Vista Home Premium - OEM for $119. All done.
Now, if you're going to be running that on a Macintosh computer, you make baby jesus cry.
it keeps the economy going. for every copy of windows that ships, 3 tech support jobs are created.
