Hints of the Next Version of Keynote?
Many people noticed some unusual Keynote presentation effects in Job's recent keynote at MacWorld (e.g. the small text exploding above). Now Brian Peat over at KeynoteUser.com has gone through the keynote with a fine-toothed comb, identifying a bunch of new stuff, like path animations and lots of explosions that cannot be done with Keynote 3 (editorial note: explosions = good). Since it stands to reason that Jobs might just have access to some pre-release version of Keynote, it's a pretty safe guess that this is a preview of what's in store for Keynote 4. It's an interesting read and will probably have heavy Keynote users salivating for iWork '07.

I too was at the keynote. My oobservation was that they were using LiveType files inside of Keynote to animate the text. All of the FX were the standard LiveType dealio. I do the same on sad days when I am designing slideshows.

i rarely use keynote myself, but i do remember that when Keynote was first announced, Jobs stated quite interestingly that a number of keynotes prior to its Official launch, they had been using Beta versions without anyone knowing. If thats any indication, maybe they are using a Beta of a new version in this instance

brian, don't pity them. keynote isn't half bad. it's .249 bad, which is saying something. also, explosions would be great, for that BOOM thing ;)

I doubt he's using LiveType...only because the last time we saw effects that looked like LiveType, those effects ended up being rolled into Keynote. My guess is he was running Leopard and a new build of Keynote (which he's said in the past he does). Steve is the #1 beta tester of Keynote, so if he wants something in there, he makes them put it in. Thankfully, he likes nice looking effects :)
On a side note, I'm surprised that this story is getting so much traction, but pleased that we're getting traffic at KeynoteUser.com, even if it is a niche site.

Do you really think they use the stock, consumer version of keynote to do that, I don't think so. They probably have had their own super duper special version of the software that they've been using for some time.

That's what's so amazing about the stock consumer version of Keynote. :) Well, not the version that's out now, but, when the new version is released, we can expect to be able to do what they're showing and do it fairly easily.
Just look back at the Keynote's he did just before Keynote's release and you'll see what eventually became Keynote 1.
