Software Update: Airport Extreme update 2007-001
Newly available from Apple is the Airport Extreme 2007-001 update. Says Apple, 'This update is recommended for all Intel-based Macintosh computers and provides compatibility with AirPort Extreme base stations and networks.' The Apple site doesn't say whether this "compatibility" includes 802.11n support (which I'd highly doubt--those new Airport Extremes aren't even shipping yet, are they?) or in fact much about what this update actually does. So if the update makes your computer explode or something else that's new, radical or interesting, let us know in the comments.
Thanks Ian Gowen
Update: News.com reports that the update plugs several security holes that were discovered during the November "Month of Kernel Bugs" campaign.

First of all.. i didnt have any problem whatsoever with the my imac intel based wifi.

How can i downgrade please????? so annoying
Some users experience an AirPort Wi-Fi problem after installing this update: the icon on the status bar shows the AirPort is active, but not connected, and has no signal, however the network may be connected. Additionally, one cannot turn off the AirPort, nor are any networks listed. Other tools, like iStumbler and Network Diagnostics seem to work fine.
Here's how to fix it:

This "update" did indeed make my MacBook explode. By doing the update, I effectively cut off my internet access. Whatever was in this patch caused my Internet connection to go on and off sporadically. I had to remove the patch to get it to work again. Browsing other forums, I found that I was not alone.

Then, my home network was no longer able to connect, but my wireless network at school did. I called tech support for the manufacturer of my home network router. He gave me a simple solution that fixed my problem. The upgrade changed the security settings to use a WPA encryption instead of WEP. So all I needed to do was change the encryption on all the wireless connectons on my network to WPA, and everything works beautifully now. Plus, it seems faster, but that may just be my imagination.

I'm gonna go ask them at my school's help desk and see if they have any ideas... the vpn client tends to be sketchy at best ot begin with, so maybe it doesn't have to do with the update. It used to work though...

January 26 2007 at 1:12 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOne one of my intel macs (mac mini) my airport express signal bar radiates like a slow blinking navigation beacon --full or 4 bars down to 1 or 2 bars then back up to 4 or 5 then starts all over again. I hoped the upgrade might fix this but it didn't.
