Google Notifier Tip: Increasing the Number of Displayed Messages

David Phillip Oster, the author of the Google Notifier menubar application, has penned (keyboarded?) a nice little entry on the Official Google Mac Blog in which he describes some of his thinking behind his design decisions. But best of all is his little Easter Egg. It is possible to increase the number of messages displayed in the menubar drop down pane to 20 from the default of 4, reducing the need to mouse through to the "View More" sub-menu. I followed his instructions easily enough, as it merely requires you to invoke a hidden Defaults Editor by selecting the program's Preferences while holding down the Command and Option keys and to type in some changed values.

'keyboarded'?- certainly not! If you want something more flowery than 'written' you could go for 'tapped out'.

Does anyone know if the Notifier (Mac or Win) logs into Gmail in the clear, or does it use SSL or HTTPS?

When *I* login to Gmail, I only use the secure login. Had to stop using Notifier because I can't find any documentation on which login it uses and I don't want this app logging me in in-the-clear.

I use Googlemail, but I also access it via Mail. Is there any way to get Mail to tell Google that I've read the message? I like the idea of using Google Notifier instead of having Mail open in the background all the time, but Google Notifier doesn't know that I've already read messages in Mail.
