Skype 2.5 goes gold, adds SMS messaging

Did you ever notice, back in those 1950s & '60s "In The Future" news segments and featurettes, that nobody ever said "In the future, you'll be able to make free calls to anyone in the world, using your computer?" Probably because those shows were all sponsored by Ma Bell.

Our 2nd-favorite multimedia chat tool (and #1 disruptive technology) Skype for Mac 2.5 is out of beta today, adding free SMS messaging, 10-party chat and a new video codec to the usual slew of bug fixes. You can download it now and start chatting with all your far-flung friends; also, a reminder that today is also the last day for the discounted year of domestic calls SkypeOut deal. It's $14.95 through the end of 1/31, going up to $29.95 tomorrow.

Update: The SMS messages still require Skype Credit as before, apologies for the mixup.

Thanks Chaim!

Sadly, sending DTMF tones (to log into meeting systems or listen to your answering machine etc) still doesn't work. This has only been a known issue with Skype on Mac since 2 years-or-so, so no reason to fix it already. :(

What's with iChat being TUAW's favourite IM client? iChat, to say the least, is crap. I thought maybe Adium would have been TUAW's favourite. But iChat has support only for .Mac and AIM (and Jabber), and is extremely limited with what it can do. Its only possible selling point is the flashy video chats it can do, period.

What was the deal with Skype using your computer as a supernode? Something to the fact it was using your bandwidth to support the peer network.

Anyone remember how to disable that

you said 10 party chat, but its 10 party audio call. the chat can handle like 50 people at a time if not more. actually skype chat is awesome. if you have a group chat and someone goes offline they get get any messages they missed when they reconnect - actually extremely helpful for work stuff. also note that that the 10 party audio call can be a mix of other users and regular phone calls.

Just tested it, and can confirm text messages are charged, but also work like a charm to UK and Swiss networks. Nice.

Hmm, i don't see anywhere on the site where it says send sms for free. I see where it says send sms for cheap meaning it's not free.

Can't see where it says "FREE" SMS messages. "Cheap" is the term they use
