PhotoInfoEditor: Geocode Your Photos

It's becoming increasingly common for people to want to include meta-data with their photos about where they were taken. Geocoding is the process of adding location information to the meta-data of digital photos, similar to the Exif meta-data that nearly all digital cameras add with date, time, exposure settings, etc. There are even few digital cameras out there with built-in GPS to facilitate this. PhotoInfoEditor is a nice little utility that allows you to geocode your existing photos, either by just typing in the latitude and longitude, or even better, by marking the location on the built-in Google Map. As you can see from the screen capture above, you select the photo you want to geocode and then simply zoom into the location on the Google Map to mark it. Very slick.

PhotoInfoEditor is still a little touchy (sometimes the Google Maps don't draw correctly), but it's a nice idea, and best of all it's free (donations requested). Obviously, you have to have an active internet connection for this to work, but you can mark locations anywhere in the world.

You definitely should try this neat geocoding bookmarklet. It's the easiest way for me and many Flickr users. It works as a seamless integration into Flickr - with a map next to the photo you want to geocode. No greasemonkey needed!

Ouch! No drag & drop. You may find this tolerable. I don't. Even if it's donationware.

You can also use my Geotagger (http://craig.stanton.net.nz/software/Geotagger.html). just position Google Earth over the location you want to use and drag images (from iPhoto, from the Finder, pretty much anywhere) and drop them on the Geotagger icon and it'll embed the coordinates into the jpeg.
If you then want to do something with them I wrote iPhotoToGoogleEarth (http://craig.stanton.net.nz/software/iPhotoToGoogleEarth.html) to create Google Earth KMZ files that show the photos in pop-up bubbles at their locations. Totally free but donations are not turned away :-)

worked great for me too. as for the map drawing issue, i found that if you just switch from one of the map view to another and back it works ok.

Are there any plugins built into iPhoto to do this?

Works for me! Of course, the Google map drawing was troublesome, but for a freebie app, this is cool!
