DocumentWallet & ReceiptWallet: PDF Managers
DocumentWallet seems to be the latest in a new category of Mac applications, the PDF manager. Much like Yep (which we covered when it was called kip), DocumentWallet is an iPhoto-like application for keeping track of PDFs. In addition to its library functions, DocumentWallet allows you to scan document into its library with any TWAIN compliant scanner. One nice thing about DocumentWallet is that the PDFs are not stored in some sort of proprietary database, but in the file system (though the same is true of Yep). The maker of DocumentWallet also offers a very similar program called ReceiptWallet that does much the same thing, but focuses on saving receipts rather longer documents, and even includes some rudimentary math functions for keeping track of expenses. Like Yep, Yojimbo, and others, DocumentWallet also adds a convenient Save PDF to DocumentWallet option to the PDF pane of the OS X Print Dialog. DocumentWallet and Yep are very similar, but there are some differences, perhaps most importantly Yep's focus on tags and DocumentWallet's focus on categories. Which one works better for you will probably depend on how you work, though both are worth a look.
DocumentWallet and ReceiptWallet are $29.95 each (or $44.93 for both) and a 21-day demo of each is available.

I LOVE ReceiptWallet. I use the print to ReceiptWallet feature all the time. If DocumentWallet is the same quiality (which it appears to be) it'll be a great application as well.
Plus, the developer is EXTREMELY responsive with updates and fixes. Nice!

Good idea. Seems a bit overpriced and I think two programs should be integrated as one, however.

I also tried YEP too, but I think they are starting to charge for it now.

How about using iPhoto? Create a smart album with keywords, burn to cd backup, etc...

Pretty lame that it doesn't support OCR to help identify the documents, there FAQ is BS.
Q: Why doesn't ReceiptWallet or DocumentWallet do OCR (optical character recognition)?
A: OCR software is not sophisticated or accurate enough to find all the information you need from a receipt or document. Therefore, you would spend more time correcting what the OCR input than it would take to input it manually. We think this is a reasonable tradeoff.
The OCR wouldn't have to be that great, it would only have to allow you select the important information from each scan document and recognize the document the next time you scanned a similar one.
Do you mean to tell me that OCR technology is so bad that if you told it this was your electric bill it couldn't recognize it whenever you scan in another electric bill?

I find the idea promising - I have a need for organising scores of journal articles.
You really need to be able to search inside the PDFs and also to have a decent scalable preview pane.
I found Yep (I tried it when it first came out) to be pretty useless - but I am not a fan of tags.
I'm not sure this will beat Bibtex + citekey labelled PDFs for journal ease of use. If you could somehow integrate your .bib file as an index for your pdfs...
