Access Streaming Music in Front Row

One thing that seems to be missing from Front Row is access to the same streaming media "radio" stations that are in iTunes. Fortunately enough, the guys at EntertainMac have found an easy way to get around this limitation. Basically, all you need to do is drag and drop the m3u streaming playlist files for your favorite stations into your music library and create a playlist with those "tracks." Now within Front Row you can navigate to that playlist within the Music menu to start the stream playing; quick, useful, and easy-the best kind of tip! While nobody has one to test yet, I'm guessing that this should work with Apple TV as well. In addition to the built-in stations, they also helpfully point out that you find many more online.

I've done this and use my XBox to listen to streamed music, by having a Playlist called Radio Stations. And I put an asterix at the beginning of the name so that it's at the top of the list and easy to find.

This is the one feature thats preventing me from ordering my Apple TV... I want to make sure streaming radio is supported (somehow).

Nice tip indeed, but how do you get the other streamed radio stations to play in iTunes?

Wow, I've been doing this one for some time. I never realized it was not common knowledge.

It's not perfect, though. My playlist name keeps getting replaced with the fairly long ID string sent in the stream. Afterwards I can't tell the bit rate from the name anymore. Also, the ID string does not fit as well into the "Now Playing" page in FrontRow.

Apple, would it hurt so much to make the "Radio" list show up in FrontRow? This has been an obvious missing feature in 3 versions of FR, and who nows how many iTunes versions.

It'd be great if Front Row could access music on an iPod, for those of us who carry them around with our Mactops.

You can do something similar with movies that aren't in iTunes or are stored on an external drive by placing an alias to whatever folder you have the movie(s) stored in within the Movies folder and Front Row will treat the alias like a folder which will then allow you to watch your favorite .avi, .mov, or whatever in Front Row--mind you, for some movie files (usually .avi files) you'll need the codecs to play the movies just like you would in QuickTime.

Keep in mind Shoutcast radio streams work great on iTunes, too. You should probably add this to the post.
