Desky: drag and drop to change desktop wallpaper
A while ago we found an Automator action that lets you drag and drop images to set them as your desktop background. No fuss, and no clunky System Preferences pane. I didn't notice it at the time, but TUAW reader Tice commented with a link to his little app, named Desky, that can do the same thing without any of the Automator setup work involved (sorry Tice!). Fortunately, Desky is finally getting its time in the TUAW spotlight, as I caught an update in my RSS feeds that adds the ability to set Desky as a button in the Finder toolbar, as well as Universal Binary goodness.Desky is freeware and available from Tice's site.

I created an automator action to do this a long time ago, saved it as an app and it resides on my dock. I drag a pic to it and it sets it as my desktop.

How exactly is dragging and dropping to the syspref pane different from this? Or easier for that matter.

Even better is using automator to create a contextual menu plugin. Ctrl+click the file you want to set as the desktop background and Automator will do the rest for you.

Of course, none of this is as simple as the Desktop Picture plug-in for Quicksilver: select an image, invoke QS, type a couple letters "SEt as desktop", hit enter.

Why don't any of these wallpaper apps work for multiple monitors?

The Quicksilver plugin works well, until you go to view Desktop Prefpane and find out that it till shows the old desktop image. Something is being cached and not cleared correctly.

Do folks actually change their Desktop pics so often that it's worth taking up a Finder sidebar slot? Maybe I'm just boring, but I hardly ever change mine. It may be worth mentioning that a better spot for this kind of thing, IMO, would be the Finder toolbar.

Hi, I made that little thingy. Actually I have no second monitor to test, so sorry for that missing option. I chnage my desktop pictures usually 1-2 times every two weeks, but while trying out many different new pictures the system preferences are quite circuitous.
I found out how to manage the 64x64 icon so the top bar is not really a new option to the Dock or side, it works with the older versions also but has now a new fitting button Icon.
Greetings from rainy Hamburg, Tice ; )
