SoundSource: Menubar Source Selector
Rogue Amoeba just announced the release of version 1.2 of their SoundSource menubar utility. They say that it "has been recoded from the ground up for better performance, and now also features an option to open the Audio MIDI Setup application." SoundSource sits in your menubar and allows you to easily change "your audio input and output sources with a single click" instead of going through the Sound Preference Pane in your System Preferences. If you have to switch sources on a regular basis (e.g. between different microphones, line-in sources, etc. while audio editing or podcasting) then this can be a really handy tool. Frankly the screenshot (right) is not terribly exciting on my machine since I don't have multiple sources to choose from, but nonetheless, you get the idea.SoundSource a free download from Rogue Amoeba's Freebies Page.

Pretty cool, but does anyone know how to get the bitrates displayed in the menu bar like that screenshot has?

Those are my up/down bandwidth numbers on my primary internet connection. It's MenuMeters from Raging Menace:

omg i'm soooo happy to have found this ! With my new mac pro I have to manually go into system preferences to change the sound output between external speakers and headphones everytime I wanna switch. Such a huuuge pain in the ass. This is exactly what I need ! Thank you!!!

This is pretty nice. I usually use my speakers when playing WoW or music, but when it gets late or I'm on Ventrilo, I switch to my headset. This is gonna be a lot easier than opening the prefs menu.

Yeah, just a quick question: how the hell do you uninstall software from this company?

@5: Run the installer package again, and choose "Uninstall"

If only this were around earlier! This would be great for my desktop which is connected to external speakers. I usually stay up late, so I can't play music at the volume I want. This also has great application with WoW and headsets. I'll check this out sometime.

@vectorelement: SoundSource has been around since 2004. This is just an update. And Mat notes all that's new above, which is not much for those of us who are currently running version 1.1 successfully. Still, can't complain about useful and free software!

If this added AirPort-speakers as outputs, I would've paid for it.

You can use Airport speakers as outputs using Airfoil, from the same company: http://rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/mac/
