Apple TV displays to go up on March 5th

A TUAW operative deep in the bowels of Cupertino risked life and limb (well, mostly their job) to let us know this delicious little tidbit about the Apple TV. Look for your local Apple retail store to have a nice, shiny new Apple TV display in their window on March 5th. The display will showcase the Apple TV hooked up to a very nice Sony Bravia (just like they did at Macworld), and will no doubt cause Apple TV lust to develop in the hearts of passers by.
It stands to reason that this display will coincide with general availability if the Apple TV in Apple stores, but our operative wasn't certain on that front.

I choose to believe this as fact, and I can't wait to go play with it myself. I've got a long set of wires running from my studio to my living room that I'd love to get rid of.

I think that will be great. In our local shopping center (Pentagon City near DC), the Apple Store is right next to the Sony Style Store. Apple's stark white contrasts with Sony's dull grey and dark interior. Usually people sit out on the benches between the two soaking up the free wifi.
If Apple's displays use the Bravia tv, it could be a good thing for the both of them! One (2) stop shopping for your iTV and TV.

I am so disappointed appleTV doesn't support DivX. What's the point?
(Oh - I forgot - the point is to drive iTunes movie sales.)
Feh.

I'm more disappointed it hasn't arrived in stores or anywhere yet. I can understand Apples secrecy on the development side of things but release dates? The Extreme base station sort of just trickled into stores with no anouncement as well.
Getting sick of waiting, and sick of calling into the local Apple store to ask and be told (literally) 'dunno'

iTunes can play any AVIs, so I imagine that AppleTV will be able to stream these as well.
1) Have the right codecs installed for Quicktime.
2) Create a Referenced Movie in Quicktime from your AVI file (some_name.avi)
3) Import tiny Reference Movie (some_name.mov) into iTunes.
4) Play via iTunes.

Apple has given a date for the AppleTV. It's February 28th, but don't expect to see them in Apple stores until mid March.

I heard this directly from an Apple Store employee in our town last week. He said they already had a handful of beautiful HDTVs in the back ready to be displayed as soon as the Apple TV units came in. He made it sound like they were planning on having more than one AppleTV - HDTV setup for display around the store. I just noticed confirmation of Apple's plans over at ifoapplestore.com :

Apple TV Display Plans Revealed
Observant visitors to Apple stores have noticed the delivery of Sony Bravia flat-screen, LCD televisions in preparation for the arrival of the Apple TV product later this month. Now planograms have been prepared for the stores indicating that three computers will be removed on a right-side wall display counter to make space for the 32-inch LCD televisions and Apple TV. At most stores the space will be to the front of the right-side Genius Bar. Also, look in the iPod accessories section now–there are HDMI cables on sale. The release date rumors for Apple TV are now February 28th.

I'll buy on AppleTV based solely on whether or not it can allow for switching audio tracks.
Right now, no one seems to know for sure, but it seems highly unlikely.
...which is really a damn shame :(
