ThinkSecret posts Leopard Gallery

Our friends at ThinkSecret are at it again, posting images that will raise Apple's ire. This time, it's screenshots from Mac OS 10.5 (build 9A343, to be exact).

They note that window resizing is now instantaneous and fluid, without that brief delay that some 10.4 users experience. Also noteworthy is the new "security" screensaver. When the machine detects movement, it displays images (presumably from the built-in iSight) with a real "security camera" feel. Pretty cool.

We can't verify any of these images, of course, so keep that in mind while poking around the gallery. ThinkSecret is tagging the end of March as a release date.

I'm guessing the new X11 icon is some kind of in-joke around Apple poking fun of bad 'glossy' icons. If so, it's a nice developer joke, if not well... ouch.

I absolutely love the new Terminal icon. Again one of those details that really show a lot of thought goes into making this stuff, withouth losing creativity.

Hey takagawa,
what are we supposed to be looking for at 43 minutes, and I assume you mean the WWDC video from last year. At 43ish there's Jobs talking about the complete package, and at 44 there is just a screenshot of a normal looking desktop.

Looking for what you're saying, could you post a more exact point, or specifiy which vid you mean?

Thanks in advance.

Core animation will probably not result in UI improvements. If anything, we'll see a lot more fancy but otherwise useless (usability-wise) interfaces appearing. Not a good trend to be encouraging, in my opinion.

That said, Leopard will probably be worth it for time machine and virtual desktops for me. I dislike the third party VD solutions I've tried and backup is something I can always use a hand with.

yeah.... does anybody else so NOT CARE about new screen savers, desktop pictures, and minor Terminal updates? How about some big changes that actually will improve the majority of user's experience, and some MAJOR UI refreshing.....

It could be possible that Apple is not loading any UI changes into the developer seeds as those are not absolute necessary for updating applications/drivers/etc.

I'm hoping for some UI upgrades for Leopard as well, and I believe Apple has more to show us.

However, I think the bulk of UI improvements will come from developers due to the introduction of Core Animation. I suggest you take a look at last years WWDC Mac OS X State of the Union address, about 43 mins into the video.

If Think Secret is right, and Apple intends to release Leopard at the end of March, I'd be quite disappointed. If Apples hopes to win over more converts to the platform, they'll have to do a bit better than the minor user interface upgrades found in Leopard. While there are truly a great number of astounding technical developments in the actual frameworks of the operating system, try explaining to your grandma why garbage collection in Objective-C 2.0 is so important...
